So I'm in kind of a pickle. I am a huge fan of stefano ricci ties and zegna medallion ties. I am applying to enter my business school at my university and theres a whole process my question is should I just stick to basic ties.... I saw a zegna medallion in neiman marcus last call that looked like the picture I'm inserting it's from Ebay and a floral type which I'd never wear but it's an identical pattern just floral instead of medallions....my gf said it looked good and wasn't too flashy but I was like yes it is ....

Stick with a basic/classic tie. Wear that flowery tie to church on Sunday.

So it's hard to know your taste, but beyond that you should take into account where you will interview.

I do all the hiring for my company, but since I'm in apparel I interview a heavy majority of women. I'm also in LA. Short form - I see very few ties. I wear a tie, but men I interview seldom do. Even a lot of bankers dont wear suit and tie anymore.

I grabbed some ties off my racks that I think are interview appropriate. I am more garish than some.

Starting from left:
1 and 2 are have very small intricate patterns, they are busier up front but smooth from distance.

3 and 4 have small patterns. Tie 4 gets a ton of complements. My sartorially inclined big law friends love that tie.

Tie 5 is the most avant garde I'd go. Ancient Madder is less shiny and more fun- looks classic so can get away with more patterning.

Tie 6 - stripes are pretty classic. This is shantung, providing some texture.

Tie 7 - Grenadine is extremely classic. This is a Garza gross, so a bit more forward and textured. Can help make you look casual in a positive way. I think Navy and Burgundy Grenadine ate must own ties.

Tie 8 - included to show that a well made solid has its place. I wore this tie today with a beautiful LP navy and red check jacket. Accented it but let the jacket do the talking.
