I'm a bit overwhelmed and could use some buying advice. A bit of a novice admittedly in suit purchasing..

Thanks to a wedding in about two weeks I need to buy a new moderately-priced suit and am overwhelmed with options. I'd like to buy something of very good quality so I can also wear it to the 5 or 6 business functions year round that a suit is an appropriate choice. My job, personality and the wedding are not uptight, so I'm thinking of a style that is not too stuffy; a little polish without being too slick.

I'm in New York City so have access to some of the best shops and department stores. I'd like to spend between less than $1000, closer to $500-600 if possible.

Ideas??

From what I understand, you can nab a Ralph Lauren Black Label at the Woodbury Outlets in your area, for around that price range. It's cut pretty slim though, so make sure it (dare I say it...) suits your tastes.

Woodbury hasn't had any substantial stock of Black Label or Purple Label suits since about 3 days after they opened and SFers nabbed all of their merchandise.

I would go see what's on sale at Bloomingdales this weekend. Since you have only two weeks, focus on fit more than on construction. Avoid black.

i'd go for a charcoal or navy suit. white pocket square. navy tie (if with charcoal) or grey tie (if with navy).

sorry, i'm kinda commanding you. lol. but, to me, gray and blue is most likely the best combination ever.

Hit Filene's in Union Square, Century 21 and Syms to see if you can find something that is high-quality...but beware: Those stores are often where they send Bad Fabrics To Die.

Also, try the Jersey Garden Outlet Mall if Woodbury Commons is too far for you...like the above-mentioned stores, watch out to make sure you don't stick yourself with discards, and you will not find the best sales help either...but sometimes with luck and a bit of digging you can get a major label for a pittance (plus, no sales tax).

There are few Macy's supporters on this board, but I am one of them. The 34th street store has a sizeable men's suit department, and though there are many cheap, fused suits to get the masses in you will find some better labels at great prices.

If you do SoHo, try Linus New York. Not the biggest selection, but what a bang for the buck:

And as all posts should, I will end with this:

DON'T GO TO MEN'S WEARHOUSE!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. So far, still shopping.

Just an FYI- Linus New York in SoHo closed up- tried that this morning.

Check out Sarar in midtown. They have a very interesting selection of suits for around $500-600. The prices say twice that, but when I visited I was continuously assured that everything was about 50% off. I think you can even negotiate price, to some extent. In any event, they use some good fabrics (e.g. zegna), and the Turks know how to do textiles, IMO.
