Just dropping in to commiserate. I'm 6'5"/205, and will echo the sentiments that "big and tall" stores are not what you're looking for. Like the conventional XL sizes, they are intended for people who are large horizontally, not vertically. J. Crew's Large-Tall size is usually reliable, though I have had a couple items (out of several dozen) still not be long enough.

I'm not quite as tall as you (6'3, 200 lbs), but I have long legs and arms, so am in pretty much the same boat. Here's a plan that might work for you.

Jeans: APC Rescue. The 32 (which would fit you if you wear a 34 in other jeans) comes in a very long inseam (longer than 36). Quality is higher than mall brand stuff, and within your price range (mid $100s). They offer a classic "slim straight" fit that is somewhere along the lines of the Levi's 501. These jeans are designed to be worn everyday, and obviate the need for a second, third, or fourth pair. Wear them until you blow the crotch out, then buy a new pair.

As for shirts. I wear a 16/36 dress shirt, and have had great luck with Band of Outsiders XXL button-downs. I can honestly say that the fit that these shirts offer is worth the price. Look at it this way. You can spend $200 on three crappy shirts from J. Crew that you will never wear (because they don't fit your body, are poorly made, and look bizarre when worn untucked), or you can spend $200 on a shirt that you will wear all the time because it fits great and is well-made.

Buy two in classic patters or colors, and two sweaters (merino wool v-necks in grey and navy, say) that will go with either shirt, and you've got eight possibilities to work with, all for about $600 bucks.

Finish things up with a high-quality belt (I like Tanner Goods) and a pair of Clarke's Desert boots (I wear Alden Chukka's, which are the same basic concept but a slight step up in price) and you've got pretty much everything you need to be a decently dressed dude for the next year or so, all for about $1000.

Yeah I have seen a couple Large-Tall items from both JCrew and BR still be a little short in the sleeve. It amazes me how much variation there can be in sizes from a brand. .

I have considered buying a XL-Tall and taking it into a good tailor to get slimed down some. Might work for the shirts a Large-Tall just does not cut it.

Interesting. I wear a 16 1/2 36/37 in dress shirts and you are saying that an XXL from Band of Outsiders might fit? I'll keep that in mind for the future.

I am looking for jeans, chinos, casual button ups, nice pullovers, and a few nice sweaters. I do not want to spend $100 for a shirt, or $150 for a pair of jeans. I am looking to update my wardrobe on about $1000. Could you guys please give me some ideas of some basic wardrobe items that I should have, as well as a place that a tall guy can find them??? Thanks in advance. I really appreciate any help.

Earnest Sewn Kyrre selvage jeans in size 34 (occasionally found for approximately $50-75 on ebay). Inseam should be about 38 to 40 inches (for stacking), and you could then have a tailor hem or chainstitch them accordingly - but leave room for shrinkage). I think Imperial denim carries a 37 inseam.

As for shirts, just switch over to buying sized shirts (16X37 or whatever you are); you can also go semi-custom at paul fredrick or custom at Lands End for less than $100 a shirt, and pick the slim-fit options in order to get a slimmer shirt.

Yup, if you ever step your jeans game up he goes up to 38" (and used to do up to 42" for special orders, not sure if he still does that since it's not an option on the site)

BoO for tall people?!? Not exactly the best advice unless you're really leggy

Denim is probably pretty easy. Plenty of cuts around that have a long inseam.

Probably best to find a good tailor dude and start getting MTM stuff.

MTM works mostly for dress shirt. If you are in the market for more casual wear then it tends to be a little better to find a brand that offers Tall sizes.

http://www.rochesterclothing.com/ is probably the best of the big + tall shops. The clothes aren't hideous on the whole. There is some nice stuff. If you get a copy of their catalogue, there are some really nice fits. Especially for men your age. If you're slim, then I think the necessary requirement for you when shopping at a B&T place is a tailor... I've gotten more shirts tapered than I can shake a stick at. The general idea is that "big" = horizontal. But good luck getting long inseam pants with a 34 waist. I'm a 32 waist with a 37-38 inseam. I get bespoke or unhemmed extra tall suits (if off the rack) and for jeans Momotaro (39.25" inseam). I do not own a pair of khakis or casual slacks... They don't exist in my size. I'm convinced of it. I will probably get some bespoke one day. The wool pants at www.howardyount.com are unhemmed at 36.5" which is quite good. They're too heavyweight for me in the Australian summer though... And possibly in need of that extra half inch.

I recall that poster Doctor is quite tall. You may want to look up some of his fits and send him a PM. Hopefully he will check this thread. edit: Wow, that was freaky.

The one thing I have trouble with is shirts.

The typical recommendation for length is to have one onch above your fly, but then the length of the shirt is way off porportion to the length of the sleeves, looking pretty comical porportion wise.

This is why I tuck my shirts all the time now.
