So my date is wearing this to prom:

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/1053/windsora.jpg I have a black suit and a grey suit available. What could I wear that would match turquoise and purple? The guy I usually buy ties from suggested a lilac dress shirt with a black/purple/lavender/lilac pattern tie. From reading the past prom posts at this forum, seems like the consensus is the traditional black tie & tuxedo, but would that really compliment my date? Thank you for taking the time to read this

Wrong question. Get a pair of cufflinks which resemble the colours of her dress. Do the traditional tux, black bow tie, dress studs, nice shoes. Get a black cummerbund too, and a nice haircut before the prom. What happens? If she asks how you match - bang - you roll up your sleeve. The chick will dig the fact that you're subtle. It's so, like, hot and understated. And reeks of confidence. If she's hot (which she should be, since you're taking her) she shouldn't need 'complementing'. This isn't home furnishing. If you must, I think a similar bow tie would be ok, if you can find one. On the photos, looking back, you will look like a damn slick individual, and not like you're married.

^I agree. Your date should look her best. You should look your best. It rarely happens that this can be achieved by overlapping. Not for nothing that rule #1 of male garment shopping is Do Not Bring Significant Other

Wear a classic dinner jacket with cufflinks to match (as mentioned above) - the night will be about her standing out and being stunning. Your role in that aspect is to perfectly complement and "present" her, by wearing the dinner jacket.

Black tie matches everything. Don't try to change it, you'll end up looking clownish. The matching cufflinks thing is fine, but that's about it.

Agree 100% ... go with that "war philosopher" and enjoy your prom.
