As some of you know I am on a mission to acquire a sports jacket that fits normally.

Unfortunately, being a 41" on the dot and 5'8", it's not the easiest to find off the rack suits. Usually Canali fits me best but can be a little boxy at times.

This blazer is a 42L that I can get for a great price, but my concern is that it's too long. Try not to let the sleeve length deceive since they definitely need to be shortened. For some reason I think the jacket is doable, and if I shorten it wont really affect the rest of the jacket. Looking at the vent, it's covering most of the back. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to bring the jack up to my knuckle to meet the disputed "arm length test" I would be showing much more than people would want to see.

I thought it was a little long too, but by how much. I can't see more than an inch.

Johnny if you are really 5'8 you are closer to an "S" than an "L". That jacket also looks much too wide in the shoulders on you. I'm guessing you're closer to a 41 or 40s. Not to be a shameless self promoter If you're looking for a great slim fitting navy blazer for someone that size, I'm selling one in B&S. It's an Oxxford Type A that should fit an in shape 5'8 guy perfectly. I'm almost 5'11 and it's just a bit short for me. http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=235102

speaking in generalities... I like my jacket to just about cover my butt, which in my case also means that it just hits the end of my thumb, not finger-tips... remember, it's not a nice item if it's not nice for you. Flip on the forum or return.

I posted pics of me in a 40R Zegna. Just not happening; I have to go with a 42 unless there is a 41. The issue is that it will be too tight for me under the armholes.

That blazer is awesome but i think it is going to fit too tight. I also see that the length is 29.25", the one in my picture is 31". If I shorten the jacket it probably would come out petty decent. We're also talking about too totally different animals, your jacket being extremely high quality. BTW, I have credit I need to use thats why I am going through all of this.

Thing is I have short arms (30" measured from half of back) so I cannot go by the arm test.

I'm on the fence and feel like to make this work I am going to need to trim an inch and apply some waist suppression.

Vertical "balance will be off. Pockets will be to low and
vents will be on the short side. The jacket is much too long.

I'm notorious here for preferring longer jackets than most would recommend for my height. Even I would need to chop off what I suspect would be considerably more than an inch (probably 2") from that jacket before I'd be happy with the length. That would really mess up the overall proportions. Considering the other alterations that would also be necessary, it just ain't worth it. Short answer: return the jacket.

Done deal. I did not buy this jacket since I knew it was too long but thought i could get away with shortening it.

Looks like the way for me to go is MTM so I am going to take a look at thick as thieves for my next purchase, unless I come across any 52R/S canali or zegna stuff along the way. Maybe someone could recommend other lines after seeing my story? lol

I will keep my eyes on buying and selling since I am going to posting a pair of ferragamo tramezza's up in a few anyway

I think the Thick as Thieves aesthetic is more geared toward slimmer chest sizes or slimmer guys in general. The max chest size they accommodate is 42 I think. Many on here disapprove of their too short jacket lenght and too skinny lapels.
