I have a pair of pinstripe (subtle blue, grayish/white) pants that go with a matching jacket. Can I wear these pinstripe pants without a jacket and only a white buttondown shirt? I don't want to look stupid and I cant tell if this is a against the rules of style

is it generally exceptable to wear pants from a suit without the matching jacket and only a buttondown shirt?

well try and find a picture on google of some similar pants. It's hard for us to picture these pinstripe pants.

If the pinstripes are subtle...then it should be fine to just wear a white buttondown

But if the pinstripes are defined...then i'd suggest using the jacket

Too much blue for a basic white shirt? I think the picture makes the pinstripes come out too much because they are taken up close, I dont think you can distinguish the colors too much without looking really close at the pants. I feel the while/gray is subtle enough but I dont know if I will look good or if there is any "rule" against pinstripe pants without the matching pinstripe jacket

Damn those are some terrible pictures man, haha.

Like I said before, if those pinstripes are subtle, then it is perfectly okay to wear a button-up with them.

Definitely wear a plain button-up either blue, gray, or white.

If you have a nice cardigan or v-neck sweater to wear over the button-up then that would be a better choice.

If it's a fine pattern then it probably won't look horrible, but in general, I'd suggest not wearing a striped jacket or the pants one without the other. Plaids, herringbones etc can look okay but stripes generally need to stay with their mates.
