Would Tricker's Grasmere be a good choice? They probably need to have a rubber sole at the very least (for foul weather), and they would be worn primarily with jeans. Other suggestions are good too, but I'd like to keep it under 400.

sure those are a good choice, i believe most of tricker's boots are storm welted. you might want to try them out though, some people find tricker's uncomfortable (not me)

Crockett & Jones Coniston fits the bill too!

What is your UK size?

Can't wait for winter huh?

My Blundstones held up fine in winter. Great for slush and snow. Not that great on ice, but I've yet to find a boot that sticks to ice. Salt stains wiped clean easily. Not the best for extreme cold, but thick wool socks greatly improved their insulation.

Summer is the season for planning for winter. Are the Blundstones a Tricker's model?

Salsalocust (what a horrible name

): My UK size, in Loake at least, is 8.5.

EDIT: I just looked up some photos of the Coniston, and wow -- please tell me you can get some in my size.

no, it's a completely different brand.

Something I'd like to avoid is the obviously combat-inspired sole. I really just don't like the way they look. I suppose the photos might exaggerate the prominence of the treads, though.

I'm with you on this, actually. They seemed to hit a few of the right points (rugged, rubber sole, good price) but the sole is a little excessive.
