    Hi all,

I'm new here; I just joined about a minute ago. I am looking for some advice on my new style. I recently became obsessed with the Ralph Lauren V-neck sweater over dress shirt with tie and chinos combo. I usually wear very bright ties and sometimes bright dress shirts. I have always worn chinos and tassled loafers with this style. My question is this: could cargo shorts/madras shorts work with the V-neck sweater over dress shirt and tie combo? I have absolutely no idea. I'd probably wear some of my eccentric Sperry's with this, if you all think it will work (look good). I'm 19, by the way. I love the preppy look.

Oh, another question. Do you all think that this watch would look good with this style (it's the only one I have):

Your watch looks like a good sports model and should look good with the casual clothing you propose. It is very difficult to help you if there is no good picture(s) of you in your clothes so we can see what it actually looks like.
Maybe you could take some pics and post them here on this thread, then we can proceed further.

NO, on the watch. I'm guessing it's probably (from the color, style, etc) one of those big over 42mm watches. If you are wearing a sweater, tie, etc then get something smaller and more indiscreet. Something vintage, with 3 hands, on leather or even one of those grosgrain straps will look much more appropriate than a big stainless steel chronograph with a colored dial.

Insofar as a dress shirt, sweater, and tie with shorts ... you might as well add a navy blue blazer, saddle shoes and a beanie and go for the whole prep school(boy) look. Then again, I'm an over 40, old fart so what do I know?

The watch is somewhat brash and would not do in any formal circumstances unless you are a student who would not be expected to know any better or afford more than one watch.

Ties and shorts in the Western Hemisphere is another silly notion. Short,s informal, ties rather more formal. The contradiction offers no compromise. I should also start to get away from your obsession with one item of clothing - you will acquire an unwanted reputation for eccentricity at your age.
