I'm attending an engagement party this weekend and it will be semi-formal however probably bordering more on the formal end. I was planning on wearing this suit vest + suit pants combination:

along with a light blue finely checkered shirt and a subtle diagonal striped burgundy tie. I realize typically with pinstripe suiting the convention is to use a solid shirt and then a bold pattern for the tie; I just wanted advice on whether this would be a fashion faux pas or not. Also...to make it a bit less formal I was going to roll up the sleeves and wear the tie with the top shirt button unbuttoned. What do you think?

If it's "bordering more on the formal end" then wear a coat, a waistcoat sans coat is hard to pull off without looking like a waiter. And pin-stripes are generally for business, I would not wear them to a party.

And please keep your top button done up if wearing a tie, the tie with undone button thing is a total douche look. It is just sloppy.

My suggestion: Wear a jacket. A friend of mine recently wore a shirt, vest and tie to a wedding and to me it just looked out of place and odd. A good middle ground is a sportcoat and trousers if it's not all that formal.
