Hey guys,

I'm getting married at the end of May and I decided I would buy a suit instead of renting one. I don't own any suits and I'll be moving to New Zealand this summer to pursue a MSc/PhD so it's probably time I bought one. I have absolutely no idea how to buy a suit, no idea how to dress, and no one I can ask for help.

I did some wandering around in local shops where they wanted $850 for a no name jacket and pants. I wasn't impressed, so I did some lurking around the forum and it seemed like suit supply was a good place to start. I ordered a http://us.suitsupply.com/suits/suit-grey-plain-havana-3p-p3520/P3520,en_US,pd.html?start=21&cgid=Suits and it arrived today. It does not fit at all and I'm not sure tailoring would help or if I just need to get a differently cut suit.

I'm fairly muscular with wide shoulders and very thick legs. I'm also very short; just barely 5' 6". So this suit ends up looking ridiculous on me, at least as far as I can tell. The pants are incredibly long and are practically skin tight around my thighs, the vest is long and baggy and the jacket has arms that are too long, arm holes that are too low but is tight across my chest and lats to the point where I could hulk my way out of it if I tried hard enough. I like things being tight (giggity) but tight in some places and long in others doesn't seem right to me.

Another issue I have is the price. This suit was $600 but feels just as cheap as my bargain bin Banana Republic pants I scoop up for $30-$40. Am I just naive?

It's my wedding, so if I have to spend $1k or whatever to look nice, I will. What I don't want to do is spend $6-800 on a cheap suit that doesn't look good and is over priced.

Any advice?

If you're a difficult fit, you need a good tailor.

If the suit does not fit, return it. Do not shop online.
