Found it through some creative googling. It's called "A Bittersweet Life", or Dalkomhan insaeng, made in 2005. Coincidentally, Eason's avatar comes from this movie too I discovered. How peculiar!!

Is that a Korean movie, I guess?

Yeah, supposedly in the vein of Old Boy.

I tried tons of stuff - like 'japanese film hallway scene shot' etc etc.

Then I checked the file name - bsl.gif. So I searched for bsl.gif, and nothing.

Then I searched for "bsl AND japan" - and for some reason I got a hit to a Korean actor's site. Feeling lucky, I IMDBed him and checked each of his film descriptions. One of them (Bittersweet Life) matched the initials and was an action flick, so I google imaged that and bingo, not only did I find the actor from the scene above but also Eason's avatar. A bit of luck!

BTW, the movie is a quick 5 hour download on Pirate's Bay. I'm seeding as we speak.

This movie was a bit of a disappointment. No character development to speak of. Re-hashed gangster motifs. Watch Old Boy instead.

I really liked this movie.
It has some cool action sequnces, and
Lee Byung Hun, who plays the main character, is one of my favorite actors.
