Some advice please.

I am about two purchase some ties and was needing to decide on the last one. Which tie do you think is more versatile?

Navy houndstooth
https://www.samhober.com/new-hounds...ck-and-white-hounds-tooth-silk-tie-hdt-9.html

Or black and white POW
https://www.samhober.com/prince-of-...and-white-prince-of-wales-silk-tie-pwt-4.html

I'd say the navy houndstooth between the two, but both are very formal ties, mostly used for weddings -- with a suit.

Not sure what you plan to use them for, but you might want to consider something else if versatility is your goal.

I wear my POW with a charcoal suit all the time and wouldn’t consider it ‘formal’.

I have plenty of ties, but these two would both fill a gap. I don’t have too many “formal” ties but would still wear these to work. No point buying them to sit in the closet!

Either tie with a suit is fantastic, in my opinion. About as sharp as you can get.

It depends on the scale of the pattern and sheen of the silk.

Hey all, do you think this shantung burgundy tie from gentlemen's clover would match nicely with a single-breasted navy suit? I am looking for either a striped burgundy or navy tie, would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations!

Wouldn’t recommend any shantung tie with a worsted suit. Try to find one you like in a more traditional (and matte) silk weave. And if it’s for business/formal then perhaps a neat pattern rather than stripes but no biggie there.

I wear shantung with worsted and like it. I have a pale blue Sam Hober that goes wonderfully with a Navy and with a Navy and blue windowpane. Especially the windowpane as the subtle lighter overcheck matches that color of blue. I bought it to go with a sportcoat, also worsted, but wear it everywhere.

I also have a dark blue shantung with some white medallions and wear it just as I would a maclesfield tie.

It's environment. And the suit. Shantung sort of causals down a suit a bit. Like when Bond wears one https://www.bondsuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Atlantis-Navy-Blazer.jpg

,

or when a Sean Connery bond wears a knit tie.

If you're not trying to be business professional in a stodgy office, go for it. Most people don't work in that environment, though. For social suiting, or in a more casual environment than finance 20 years ago, shantung is great.

@jcmeyer is 100% right about shantung with worsted. He has, however, failed to decry the very existence of the slubs, so overall he is only half-right.

I can't believe your clients trust you when you're wearing shantung.

I’m sure they just overlook it. Charm and wit, or they’re very forgiving.
