NC St should never have won. Valvano was a god in the ACC after that. Haven't repeated since if I recall.

More than suffering, its shit now.

The NBA is getting these guys before their bodies tighten and they all become a bunch of James Worthy's. More athleticism in the league.

No way its more exciting. I did watch that Butler team, though, with Gordon Hayward. Nice story. But NBA playoffs are more fun to me.

Nope, that's not how the cap works.

There are 4 ways of acquiring a player: draft, trade, signing a player whose bird rights you own (i.e. generally a free agent who was on your team at the end of last season), and signing a player whose bird rights you don't own (i.e a free agent who was not on your team at the end of last season.)

With drafting, trading, and signing free-agents whose bird rights you own, you can exceed the salary cap. With signing a free-agent whose bird rights you don't own, you can pay up to the maximum that is within the salary cap.

So say the cap is $50 million. If the Knicks salary at end of year is $40 million, the max they would be allowed to offer Chris Paul is $10 million a year. However, if the Clippers salary was at $75 million, they could still offer Paul the maximum $20 million per year because they own his bird rights.

If a team is over the cap (i.e. the Knicks), the maximum they can offer a non-bird-right free agent is the mid-level exception which maxes out at around $5-ish million a year.

As another example, take the Lakers. Before the season started they were well over the salary cap so they could not sign any non-bird-right free agents for over the mid-level exception. That's why the only free agent signings they could make were Meeks and Jamison (you can split the mid-level into an x amount of players.)

Also, Steve Nash was an unrestricted free-agent but the Lakers couldn't offer him more than the mid-level because they were over the cap. That's why they ended up having to acquire him via a trade. It was the only way they could get him and pay him $9 million a year.

So basically, if you're over the cap, you can throw as much money into the players whose bird rights you own or make trades, but you cannot sign free agents for more than the mid-level. So there is no way the Knicks can get Chris Paul unless they trade for him, get $20 million under the cap, or sign him for the $5 million mid-level.

I did not watch that game (I was just a baby then) but I would assume NC State stuck to a 2-3 zone to neutralize Drexler/Olajuwan? The best (or worse) college game I ever saw was the Princeton v. Georgetown game in '89. At the beginning of the game, Vitale, in his usual loud voice, had said that he would join the Princeton cheerleading squad if Princeton won. At halftime it was like 24-25 or something, I think Princeton had the lead. They cut to the studio and Vitale is sitting there shocked, speechless and the other anchor turns to him dryly and says "Princeton called and asked what size tutu you wear".

It was my first introduction to Pete Carill and that crazy offense and I loved it. It was so beautiful to see, a bunch of no name players, I think their center was like 6'5" or something. Whenever I bump into Mourning (humblebrag), I always give him shit about that game.

I think this is one of the aspects that makes the NCAA tournament so compelling. You only have to beat each team once in order to advance to the next round. If UH and NCST had played a five or seven game series there's no way that NCST would have won. But in one game, anything can happen.

Also, to whomever said that Ralph Sampson was a disappointment in his first two years, the guy put up 20 & 10. Speaking of the Rockets, this piece is long, but it is really really good.

My favorite NCAA run ever was the '90 Loyola Marymount team that had Hank Gathers die. Man, if he lived, that team would have won the tournament. What a roller coaster to watch.

I said except for his 2 first seasons....

Anybody who doesn't think that Williams had a hand in getting Johnson fired is either high or completely oblivious.

Fuck man, those Clippers have 2 solid traits that make them really tough to beat. 1st is that bench, we know that. 2nd is they play at a speed that only Miami and OKC can match. Last night against Boston they had some moments where some of those C's were just rooted to the floor while getting blown past.

And Sac needs to trade D Cousins. Just get whoever. That guy is a poison. Saw his media interview yesterday, wow, just wow he's a bonehead.

    damn the celtics got steamrolled.

I wish they would just bring back their normal road jerseys back.

I love how DeAndre Jordan and Blake get so excited on some plays that the celebration turns into a borderline homo-erotic display of affection towards each other.

I'm not hating on them... its just that their: "I love you Bro!" "I love you MORE Bro!!" public displays of affection are so pure its a joy to watch.

Damn, he goes for a breast cup and everything. If he didnt have that phone in his hand he'd have gotten some too.

And check out Blake's face in that last frame and double damn, the way he leans in on his hand.
