Navy suit with chocolate brown tie

+1. It's not so simple as whether the colors can complement one another, but also about whether the colors need contrasting textures to complement one another. IMO, most do, some don't. Navy suit, white shirt, and brown tie does. Here's an example of that exact combo which I think works. Notice the contrasting textures, like Foo mentions. It comes form PG's blog: http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr....bxtwiaeGUrM%3D BTW, I often like brown suede shoes better with navy than smoother grains for the same reason, though this of course depends on the the textures/finishes of the other cloth elements too. edit: Shirt may be very pale blue in the pic. Hard to tell.

Definitely. I usually use a grenadine tie with this look. I recently got a dark brown wool tie and tried it out to mix things up - it was not as satisfying as with the grenadine.
