Sorry, I asked this in the ask a question thread and didn't get an answer...

I'm going to a cocktail party for the launch of my girlfriend's consulting firm. The attendees will be mostly people from the financial industry. All of my suits are for work and none of them are black.

I've narrowed down my choices to three:

1. a dark, almost black navy in a pretty bold pinstripe. This is my favorite because it's dark and it's the suit that fits me the best. But I'm worried the pinstripes will make it look like I came straight from work without changing.

2. A solid dark blue, almost navy. In fact, most people would call it navy, but it's not the dark color that I associate with navy. It's a quality suit (actually more expensive than the previous one) and looks good on me.

3. Another blue, similar to the prior but just slightly darker with subtle blue pinstripes. Actually a pretty cheap suit but I get a lot of compliments on it from people who know a thing or two about dressing.

Suggestions? Insults? Condescending remarks?

Any of them

Do remember that YOU will be the one that is there, no one who may respond will so you must feel comfortable in it. Were it me I would pick any from amongst that lot judging by the description.

Understood. I ask because cocktail parties haven't been a huge part of my life so far. In the past I have mostly worn a sport coat or blazer but I'm going as my gf's date and it's very important for her, and thus for me, to make a good impression.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Since pinstripes are associated with business, I'd choose the solid navy for a social occasion.

I would say #2, solid colors are generally the best choice for a cocktail party, even if its a business one. I owuld save the pinstripes for the office.
