I wear a lot of blue trousers (different shades / textures) but also have a pair of brown flannel and a medium grey pair. My question is if i should purchase a navy blue top coat or not?

Would the blue on blue be terrible?

I would say overcoat and trouser textures/shades are usually different enough that it wouldn't be a problem. In addition, coats are outerwear, meaning that you have some license to prioritize function over form and you'll be taking it off indoors anyway.
Coats are available in many different textures and patterns, so it would depend on the particular model you choose.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with a coat in grey or brown tones.

A navy overcoat with navy trousers is fine. But I think the combination depends more on the style of the overcoat and the rest of the outfit, not just about color. Depends on the aesthetic you're trying to create. I find that some navy overcoats are too formal to wear with odd trousers, and the color is part of that formality. Other navy overcoats are OK.

Navy is the new black and lends itself to numerous possibilities, especially in outerwear.

Whereas there are many hues of navy blue, I believe that texture is the deciding factor. A topcoat with texture -- and perhaps other colorations -- will add interest to a solid navy (or related shade) trouser.

I'm a big fan of combining blues and browns. As long as the garments are complementary and pleasing, the navy topcoat will work, although perhaps not on the deep chocolate browns.

As for gray, hey man, anything goes.
