How well does a natural belting tan (light brown) attache case (this particular example from Atlas) with gold-plated latches match black shoes and a charcoal suit?

I understand black with black is better but would tan be an absolute faux pas?

don't give a thought to matching briefcase with shoes & belt. ditto for watch straps.

Agreed, but shoes in some shade of brown will likely look better with your tan attache.

Good to know on that. My main watch has a black face and black strap and I wear it all the time which was fine when all I wore was black shoes. Now that I'm branching out into brown and tan shoes I figured I'd have to match the watch band with the belt and shoes. I have a couple of other watches I can match up with brown but they aren't as cool as my main one. Guess I'd never thought to worry about a briefcase but I'd think that a tan one would go with anything.

I wouldn't have thought to match the attache, but I usually pay attention to watchstraps...
