+100000. A 3rd lockout on his watch would be disastrous; there is no reason for three lockouts to happen.

What is really shameful is that all of the dick-swinging and posturing is over the economics while the game itself is in dire need of a change when it comes to player safety and discipline. Bettman is trying to wring every percentage point out of the players when the much bigger issue of discipline - which was rightfully by and large the focus of this past season - seems to largely be ignored. I will be infuriated if I hear Shanaban say "____ has been fined $2500, the maximum amount allowed under the CBA" again. I don't know what the perfect solution to the discipline issue is, but thats why these brain-trusts are talking.

I won't get into any conspiracy theories or funny business with the Coyotes being owned by the league and the ridiculous claims made by the league in their first offer, but the whole thing stinks. The fact that the league essentially came out with a giant middle finger directed towards the NHLPA with their initial proposal coupled with Bettman's promise of a lockout tells me we probably won't have a season this year. Yeah, obviously they are going to play hardball with their opening position but this is ridiculous. Fehr seems to be trying to foster whatever goodwill he can whereas Bettman has all the tact of a bull in a china shop. I will be extremely disappointed if after all of these shenanigans there aren't meaningful changes made to discipline; if all of this is the owners and Bettman trying to put themselves on better financial footing it will be even more clear that he is incredibly out of touch with the league he is in charge of.

Anyone up to speed on international leagues? World Juniors are a long way off... :(

A lot of people on tsn's message board seem to be coming out against the players on this. I don't know who to trust/believe when it comes down to what's what.

What would really keep Bettman in check is a competetive league in North America, ala the WHL. If someone was smart they'd get a bunch of businessmen together to create a quick pro-league here in North America. I know its not the NHL, but the owners and the commish have this, "M'eh, go play in Europe" mentality, when really the only ones who get screwed are us, the fans. Players still get paid, owners will eventually get what they want, and its us left to suffer.

    (post 6666...creepy omen)

The only silver lining to an eventual lockout for me is that the Habs are gonna suck HARD this year! A season spent in the gym might be good for the youngsters... And a year away from the game might be good for the local fans.

    Ethical dilemma here:

I play in an adult roller house league in Brooklyn. Its a pretty tough league, but I'm well respected by just about everyone from opponents to officials. The last full season i played I was named league MVP and was the leading point scorer in the league. I captain my team and play, as many guys do, without a visor or face cage. There was a play in front of my team's net where one of my d-men was battling with a forward from the other team (both guys 6' plus). My guy put an arm into his chest, and he responded by cross checking him across the head. My guy went down like a ton of bricks and no one on my team, including me, approached the other guy. I talked to him as he skated away "Are you fucking kidding me with that shit," were the words I believe but I didn't engage him. Mind you, I'm the smallest guy on my team, and not a fighter. When I saw he was 6'3" and in a full cage I decided against challenging him...I have two kids and a family I have to worry about. Did I do the right thing? The hockey player in me says no, but the pragmatist says yes. I'd be curious to know what you guys think I should have/could have done.

People who fight in beer league are silly. You're grown up, no sense in fighting.

Also why do you play roller instead of ice?

I probably would have said the same thing, but directed towards the ref. Anyone headshotting in beer league should be thrown out immediately... major + automatic game misconduct + automatic suspension. I hate beer league refs... I know you want to go home early, but everybody has to go to work in the morning, so at least protect the players by getting the thugs out of the game.

I'm not a fighter and wouldn't do it because I need my hands to do my job. Broken hand = broke Van Veen.

That's what I thought...roller is just easier on the budget and time. It costs me $125 for a 15 game season where ice would cost me about $400 for a 10 game season. Plus, ice times are much later, and with the two kids I'm up super early every day (think 5AM on workdays and 6 on weekends)...I can't function at work after a midnight game, I still do open ice in the summers though at Aviator...I miss the ice, but its a sacrifice I make for the kids (and my clothing habit).

The refs are good guys, and its a blue collar league that allows fighting (I have no idea how they can with insurance issues and what not). It's tough, so I'm glad Im respected...some guys aren't and get a real rough ride. The kid got 2 minutes for cross checking, and there was nearly a brawl after the game because of it (we just picked up an "enforcer" type guy that we sorely lacked and he was ready to go...the other guys had 2 or 3 tough guys so...

I talked to the ref about it after the game, he admitted he probably should have given him 5 and a game. We won 7-2.

Hey! I'm joining the party just in time. Hoping that there's no lockout.

Speaking of the Caps, I met Wideman at a wedding this summer. Good guy, got pretty drunk too. Hot wife. Steve Mason was supposed to be there too, but couldn't make it.

Was going to say something about me being happy he's with the Flames, but I was not going to be that guy geeking out about hockey to an NHL player.
