I know, and I should be glad the Flames are embracing a rebuild, but Feaster seems content with middling returns for his best trade bait. He's come out on the losing end in nearly every trade he's ever made. I understand Iggy and Jbo had NTCs with Iggy being an impending UFA and Jbo having an atrocious caphit, but the returns still leave a little to be desired.

On that note, word on the street is Feaster left a better return on the table rather than retain some of Jbo's salary. Trading him at 5 instead of 6.7 for one year and getting Cole / Rattie instead of two nobodies makes a hell of a lot more sense to me - this team isn't desperate for cap space and Jbos contract runs out after next season. Seems prudent in planning for the future but hey, I don't bankroll the team.

This is a deep draft, but for every Giroux or Getzlaf picked in the 20's there's a Fata, Pelech or Chucko. Given Feaster drifted a nobody who played highschool hockey in the first round last year its safe to say I'm not exactly confident in the draft outcome, three first rounders or not.

Clowe to NYR. I'm wondering about Richards and Gaborik. Gabby because he hasn't been producing, and Richards because of the cap lowering next year.

also, that Carolina injury into the boards while chasing the icing looked painful. More calls for hybrid icing.

    Bishop to Tampa

    Gaborik to Columbus (woah)

Gaborik trade is surprising, wasn't he doing well with Nash?

Still pending him waiving his NTC though.

Edit: Gaborik has agreed to waive NTC to CBJ. Wow.

not really. Stepan and Hagelin have been playing well with Nash. For the past month or two, Gabby has just not been scoring.

the trade would bring Derrick Brassard, John Moore and Derek Dorsett.

Gotcha, haven't been following NHL much this season, maybe I was thinking of last when he got off to a good start.

Good return for the Rangers, though.

yeah, that was last year. This year, Brassard has one less point than Gaborik while having played in one less game (their points/assists ratio is fairly similar too)

Redden to the Bruins. This bodes well for the other Eastern Conference teams.

A full-day snoozer for Tradecentre... so I go to lift at 2pm, come back and whoa! Some smart moves for some teams.

[OTT/TB] Ben Bishop traded to Tampa Bay for Cory Conacher and 4th round pick

Great, awesome fantastic move for Tampa. Bishop is a solid 1B and may even be a starter one day. Conacher seems like one of those guys who had a bright streak but won't amount to much otherwise, and a 4th rounder is a wash. Tampa comes out way ahead here; for all the hoopla surrounding Bishop and how he's improved his standing with his play this season I'm surprised this was the return for him. Bishop cost Ottawa a 2nd when he was little more than a hyped AHL callup, so having proved himself very capable of carrying the load this seems to be a poor return. Maybe I'm underrating Conacher though.

[CGY/CBJ] Blake Comeau to Columbus for 5th round pick

Flames managed to get a pick for this bum?! Done.

[BUF/MIN] Jason Pominville to Minnesota for Johan Larsson & Matt Hackett

At first I thought Minny came out ahead here, though Hackett is still pretty young and Larsson seems to have a great upside so I'd say this about even. Hopefully for them, Minny turns this into some playoff success.

[NYR/CBJ] Marian Gaborik to Columbus for Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett,J. Moore, 6th

Another NYR/CBJ blockbuster. Seems like it'll be good for both sides; Gabby needed a change of scenery and from what I've heard here NYR needed some depth/grit. My question is this: are the NYR better off having made these two deals with CBJ? Would you rather Nash + Dorsett/Brassard or Gabby + Anisimov/Duby? Assuming the guys I've compared are more or less equal, does Moore/6th equate with Erixon/1st? Looks like hindsight is 20/20 but I'm not sure... hopefully Nash makes it worthwhile.

    [TOR/COL]Ryan O'Byrne for pick

    Wasted pick.

[CBJ/PHI] Steve Mason traded to Philadelphia for Leighton and '15 3rd round pick

So a goalie whose career has seen a serious downturn gets traded to a place where goalies go to die... yikes. Bryz + Boucher / Mason is better than Boucher / Leighton, though... depends on how much you value a 3rd round pick but I guess Philly comes out ahead here even if Mason couldn't do anything more in Columbus.

Everything else is kinda meh... vets and depth guys for 7th rounders. Glad the deadline had some excitement at the end.

No way, Redden + Chara reunited will totally turn Wade's career around.

So which goalie gets the boot in Tampa? I assume Garon since they just moved for Lindback in the off season. Not sure Tampa has had enough goalies int he past few years. Let's see: Mike Smith who is now playing his ass off, Dan Ellis, Roloson, Bishop, Lindback, Garon. Who am I missing?

hard to tell this early. Conacher is one of those guys that everybody basically doubted, and he wasn't even drafted into the NHL. Did well in NCAA, did well in AHL (pumped in 39 goals last year), and was doing well for Tampa (second in rookie points). He's one of those guys that has continued to develop at every single level and has a bunch of upside, but he's young and who knows. I guess that's the gamble that Ottawa is ok with.

Too early to answer. Suck to lose Gabby, but yeah he needed a change.

I think I took a class on Asian meditation with this guy.

I don't think this does anythign to address Philly's needs right now.

Washington's still got a trade coming down the pipe, indications say it could be huge...

Edit: NSH trades Michael Latta and Martin Erat to WSH for Filip Forsberg.

I think the Sabres come out ahead when you consider the deal also included a 2013 first rounder and a 2014 second rounder to Buffalo.

And all the optimism in Washington with the Caps turning things around just vanished. Filip Friggin' Forsberg for ERAT??? I mean Erat is a decent player but I'm not sure Forsberg's upside is worth trading away.. especially for a team whose Cup window has closed and needs to take a long hard look at their future. What a mess... I think George McPhee has overstayed his welcome in Washington. How do you feel about this gort???

Wow, didn't see that earlier. Buffalo did very well here.

So Pominville with 1 year left on his contract fetches Larsson, Hackett, 1st + 2nd round pick... Iggy and Jbo fetch... ugh.

I liked Pomminville and hope he does well in Minny. Roy i was a little meh on while he was in Buffalo and apparently Dallas thought so too. I don't think he'll have an easy time in Vancouver if he can't produce, but he's pretty shifty so we'll see.

there were rumors of Miller and Vanek also on the block, but overall I'm glad they were kept. Miller is a very vocal leader in the locker room, and while Vanek isn't that type of leader, he is a guy who you could build a few lines around and really pump pucks into the net.

Coming into the season, the Rangers on paper mostly looked like the same team as last year with a few ins and outs. Now? Hardly. I wonder if this is a bad thing at this time of the years as the new guys need to adjust to the system.

As for the Caps? Maybe they were figuring that they've got enough blue chip players in their first two lines? No, I can't quite rationalize it. Especially if they don't resign Ribiero.

welcome to NY, Clowe, with your 1 goal and 2 assists in the first period so far.

edit 1: make that 1 and 1 as a tip in was granted to Boyle and pushed Clowe's assist out.

edit 2: make that 2 goals and 1 assist for Clowe. Brassard also sporting 1 goal and 3 assists, while Boyle had 3 points.

And Moore even got a goal  Looks like we'll have to eat crow for today but I wonder how they'll do down the stretch.

the stretch is the key, and that's all up in the air. The good news is they won the game playing NY Rangers style hockey and it's hard for me to think of a previous game this season where the Rangers were so dominant along the boards and through the middle.

the way I see it early is Clowe is stepping in for Prust, and that is much needed. Brassard picks up the skill where Gaborik left (though he doesn't need to be a 40 goal scorer), and Moore is likely standing for Staal, though he isn't as physical (but is good with the puck and the breakout, like McDonagh). Moore should be a solid fit since they Rangers like mobile defensemen who can step up on plays inside of the blue line.

good start and a great win. Lets see what happens Friday in Pittsburgh.
