The reuben is an acceptable sandwich when done well, but that is rare in many establishments.

Who could ask for anything more?
You have obviously not been to Salumi in Seattle.

I like them very much as well. Now if I could just figure out how to eat them and avoid that pesky arterial bypass at the same time.

I'm not a big fan of sandwiches, but I do like reubens from time to time.

a good Mexican torta beats it though, easily

There is another name for those. Ruebens are hit or miss. One of the best sandwiches I had was at a supermarket deli and it was smoked turkey, thin slices of granny smith apples, swiss cheese, cranberry mayo grilled between some sourdough. It was warm yet crisp and refreshing.

NYC is a great sandwich city. For me, this gets into the most beautiful girl or greatest painting conundrum but some of my favorites are:
- Cuban Sandwich at Margon
- Banh Mi at Banh Mi So 1
- Roomali rolls at cafe spice
- Pastrami and corned beef at 2nd ave deli (haven't been to the new one)
- Leo's Latticini (just about anything) in queens (our stop before the us open)

I like my first bite of a Reuben but by the time I'm done, I usually feel sick. Unfortunately, my low carb diet has forced me to limit myself to one sandwich a month.

For another "just about anything" place, you should check out Alidoro (formerly Melampo) on Sullivan St. (btwn Prince & Spring"). Quality, fresh ingredients, assembled w/ skill & care (not overly heaped w/ meat) resulting a beautiful blending of flavors - just an awesome sandwich!

The Reuben is a mighty fine sandwich. I put on heaps of dressing

Contenders are the Monte Cristo and the Cuban (from Kool Korners)

I had this conversation last night, and I think the reuben is the absolute worst of the 'popular' sandwiches. It seems to be a really love or hate sandwich, with strong support and opposition. No one sits the fence on the reuben issue.

What about the hot brown: smoked turkey, bacon, cheese sauce, and tomato...

Esquire just released a list of the top sandwiches in the US. Many hits and misses on the list, but overall, it's pretty good.
