The last time blacked out watches were popular was in the early 80's with Porsche Design. The problem was that the edges wore away and the brass showed through. They began to look pretty funky after a while, especially on the band. I think the black/black look is cool but wouldn't pay good money for it. Would rather stick with a classic SS Rolex Sub.

Rolex is the True Religion of watches: famous for being expensive, every d-bag on the street knows the name, you can find them at virtually any mall, and in most cases you can get far better for the money spent, in every possible way you want to define "better" aside from brand recognition. (And if that's what you're into, you're on the wrong forum.) If you're into Japanese denim then look into JDM (Japan Domestic Market) watches by Seiko and Orient. Even JDM Casios are interesting.

well i wouldnt exactly say rolex is the true religion of watches. rolex is more for quality than price.

My BP is one of only 1999 made in a special limited edition with a handmade Frederic Piguet 1151 movement, so I know quality watches. As far as my "weak salary" goes, let's just say that I'm a pretty successful M.D. from a well-to-do landowning family and have never had a problem buying anything I've wanted, and I'll leave it at that. I stand by my opinion of Rolex watches, formed after owning numerous examples of them (before I knew anything about watches). There are only four reasons for owning a Rolex. One, you are a chronic flipper (Rolex does have the highest resale value across all brands). Two, you actually like the styling (my favorite Rolex is the Explorer II 1655, but I've also owned a no-date Submariner and Datejust as well). Three, you want people to notice that you wear an expensive watch. Or four, you don't know anything about watches (ask the average plebe on the street what they think the "best" watch is and 99.9% of them will say Rolex). I find Rolex bracelets to be particularly appalling, and the shittiness of their fliplock clasps has to be seen to be believed.
