My Lanieri MTM Experience (ongoing)

Hello all,

I'm probably not the only one looking to upgrade his wardrobe, considering ordering MTM, and wondering which company to go with. In case it may help anyone out there narrow the field, I thought I'd share my own experience.

For the last couple of years I've bought from several companies, but have ordered most from Charles Tyrwhitt (before that........it was Old Navy t-shirts because I didn't know any better....ha!). I'm quite happy with Tyrwhitt, actually, and if you can catch a 3 / $99 or 4 / $129 or $139 their shirts are a very good value. I'd like to put a few higher quality items in my wardrobe, though.

So, I chose Lanieri from among the many options. I chose them for a few reasons:

1. High quality fabrics and construction for the price. Yes, they're expensive, but compared with other MTM companies, the fabrics and construction for
the price seems great here.
2. I had to rely somewhat on other people's reviews, and Lanieri's are best overall as far as I have seen. With forums, videos, and sites like trustpilot all
taken into account, Lanieri's record has been one of if not the best in this category.

3. I like their business model, Italian fabrics, and Italian labor.

I stay away from Chinese-made products when possible. It's not because of quality issues - there are some great quality items coming out of China - it's because slavery is woven throughout every aspect of their economy. Even if a particular factory is 'clean', I would rather not support an economy propped up by slavery. This keeps me away from several companies.

So, with the company chosen, I'm testing the process with a couple of MTM shirts. If all goes well, I'll look at a suit or two.

Hopefully there will be others interested in following, but if not, the writing is at least keeping me off the streets.....

Ok, so step one is complete. I chose two shirts:

and

I threw in this tie to make the 300 Euro mark at which point I got a 100 Euro discount on the order:

I went through the customization options and placed the order last night.

They provide a very detailed video tutorial for each of 18 measurements. I took my time and measured each carefully and most of them two or more times comparing my technique with the video. The resulting fit is the most important part of this process, of course, so I did my best here.

These won't be daily wear shirts, so I did not include an extra collar and cuffs with the shirt, but that is a very nice touch. They cost 20 Euros and when your shirt starts to wear out in those areas, you can have your tailor sew on the new ones, doubling the life of the shirt. I will be including these with any daily-wear shirts in the future.

Currently I'm awaiting confirmation of my (probably not extremely common) measurements.

I just ordered a Lanieri S150 Carlo Barbera suit. I am looking forward to seeing it in September.

Id never go Charles Tyrwhitt..... does quality stuff but its too samey
I wouldn't disagree with "samey" - if one is on a mission to stand out, Tyrwhitt might not be your first stop. Perfectly respectable dress and casual shirts, though, and often under $40.

. your own countryand modern platation slavery initaly
Indeed. It's partly because of America's history of slavery and its ramifications that I feel I should do what I can to stop supporting slavery when I see it elsewhere. And yes, there are examples to be found throughout the world. China is on an entirely different level, however. Since this isn't a human rights discussion per se, I'll just give you one reference via this BBC article.

Currently the Chinese Communist Party keeps roughly 3.8 million in slavery (according to the global slavery index -https://www.globalslaveryindex.org/2018/findings/country-studies/china/ ), a number just about equal to the number of slaves in the US around 1860.

THose numbers also do not include the ~ 2 million prisoners inside China, very many of whom are forced to do contract work.

So..........that's why I try to avoid Chinese goods when possible, and it was a big plus Lanieri as I looked at MTM clothing.

Ok....so I got a confirmation email asking me to double-check my measurements. I measured quite carefully and they are correct.

I have a larger upper body and smaller lower body than most guys with my neck / sleeve / waist size, so I usually have to choose between something tight in the shoulders or baggy in the belly. Often I have to size up and make a trip to the tailor to take in the waist and narrow the sleeves. It will be refreshing to have something with a great fit based on my actual measurements.

I suppose the next step is to wait about a month for the shirts to arrive. Once I get the fit dialed in, I'll go for a suit or two.

I've had some problems getting my confirmed measurements to Lanieri. I seem to be able to receive messages but they claim they have not gotten my replies.

I've taken to the website's 'chat' feature, which seems to be working. I just got them my confirmed measurements, so we'll see if that helps. I do look forward to eventually receiving these and checking out the fabric and fit.

I really recommend booking a virtual meeting. I spoke to this lovely lady on WhatsApp and we went through my measurements.

It wasn't the young lady from the measurement tutorial video, was it.....? Seriously though I will consider booking a consultation if I need to alter the fit once I receive the order. Thanks for your reply.

Update:

I'm guessing the lack of communication from Lanieri was due to Ferragosto weekend, but in any case, after about a week, they did get my measurements confirmed and have begun to manufacture my order.

I ordered two shirts and their policy on a customer's first order is to break the order up and send one shirt first, then after any alterations are made and the pattern is perfected, they begin production of the rest.

This makes sense, but it also means quite a lead time. They estimate my first shirt to be shipped between 9-1 and 9-9, roughly 5 weeks after I placed the order. There will likely be some time during which the final fit is determined, and then they will begin production of the rest of my order (about another month).

Overall, it will likely be mid-October before I have both shirts, about 10 weeks.

I don't mind the wait if the product is worth it. We'll see.

well......39 days since placing the order and still awaiting shipping.

I ordered two shirts. Their policy is to send one, then make adjustments to the fit before cutting the second shirt. That makes sense.

Estimated shipping window is Sep. 2 - 9 so hopefully it will ship in the next few days if not today.
At this rate, I'll get the second shirt in mid-October. That's ok with me, I'm not in a hurry.

They were quite clear that anything placed around august would come in September. It’s still an estimate. I hope it turns out good.

I will add the caveat here that this is occurring in August with an Italian company. A lot shuts down over the month. I was in Milano several times a couple of weeks ago and the place was dead. Restaurants closed. Pasticcerie, independent clothes shops, book shops, etc. The only places open were the international chains, and those close to the tourist sites.

So in all likelihood nothing was done over August, and all the fussing about the measurements, etc. is them not wanting to say to international customers they took 2-4 weeks off.

You're spot on. Ferragosto shuts most businesses and government institutions down for weeks, leading to this delay.

I just got an email saying that there's been a further delay in my order - no new shipping window yet. As I say, I can wait. Hopefully the quality and fit are worth it.
