My first suit

Well I finally bought myself a suit. A "beginner" suit from Jos A Bank this past weekend. I took it to my tailor who does my shirts for a proper fitting. It's charcoal gray. I like the suit because it says, professional and conservative, not flashy. It looks great on me and I'm sure it'll look even better once the alterations are done next week.

My question to the forum is:

Assuming that the suit is being used in interviewing/networking events (I'm an accountant and also currently working on my MBA degree), what color and/or patterns for ties would you suggest? I figure I'll wear your standard white shirt for interviews and maybe a light pink and/or powder blue shirt for networking events.

Thanks in advance for all your expert help.

edit: edited for embarrassing grammar errors.

Congratulations.

For ties, I would look to a conservative repp stripe. Blue and Green, Blue and Yellow, Blue and Red are all classic and will always look good regardless of the color of shirt.

What is repp stripe.

I like the Blue and Yellow you mention. Not a fan at all of the colors green or red. Pics?

edit: google tells me what repp stripe is. I gotta get used to the idea of strips. I figured I was just a pattern kind of guy. I'm heading to Off 5th after work to have a look see.

Any other color suggestions?

The ideal colour will vary greatly with your skin tone. However, you have a charcoal suit; with a conservative light blue or white shirt it will be hard to find a colour of tie that doesn't work. Don't go too far out on shiny finishes, don't get a tie with too wide a blade, and you should be fine.

^ Repp Tie

In my opinion, a very safe, conservative option.

I have the same tie potus posted above. However, my go to repp stripe is a sky blue and navy one like the one here: That will go with virtually any solid navy or gray suit regardless of style. Here is another favorite tie I use for interviews and such. This is a small dot or churchill dot tie in jacquard silk. The ubiquitous navy pin dot.

For interviews, wear a plain white shirt. Also, the pink/navy tie may be fine for networking, but I definitely wouldn't wear it to an interview.

For checked shirts, very small checks are best if worn with a suit. Not suitable for interviews though. Solid ties are good for checked shirts but stick with matte finished solids, not shiny satins. the dot ties or any patterned tie where the patterns are the size of a pencil eraser or smaller will also work well with checked shirts.

IMHO you are far better off skipping the checked shirts for now and just stocking up on plain white and plain light blue shirts. I'd buy white at a 4:1 ratio over blue and stick with button cuffs and a plain point or slight spread collar on all the shirts.

thanks. of course i don't plan on wearing the pink/navy stripped tie to interviews. actually i don't plan on doing any interviews any time soon, but just in case. i do plan on doing extensive networking things however starting this fall. I love everyone's suggestions. I'm going to have to keep a notebook of the different shirt/tie matching.

The blue one is from Andrews. I have the burgundy one. The quality is very good for the price, about $50.

Andrew's has a website, but the webstore doesn't work. For some reason, your order will look like it went through but your card won't be charged and you won't get the tie. You'll have to call the Philly store and order over the phone.

There are many other sources for blue pindot ties as well, obviously.
