Ok looking to get my first 2 pc suit(s)

How's navy and charcoal gray sound? I was looking at black but that seems wayyy to formal plus it's hot as hell in Houston in the coming months. Looking to spend about $300-500 a piece.

What do you recommend in this price range?

My suggestion would be navy and if you have a Nordstrom or even a Macy's you should be able to get something your price range. The one thing I will say from what me most recent experiences, it's not just the suit. Maybe spend a tad less on the suit, get a couple of nice fitting shirts and the next time amerikajinda has the $20 ties, buy a couple. I have recetnly received many comments from on a 2 year old $400 suit (Calvin Klein) because I have dressed it up with nicer shirts and nicer ties. It was on of the same suits I had been wearing without a tie. Besides a nice fitting shirt and a really nice tie makes a nice appearance even when you take the jacket off.

My .02.

Good Luck,
Joe

Ya I got a Macy's and a Nordstroms near by. What are some brands to try and some to avoid in these stores. Also, what are the stores self-labels brands so they don't try to push that junk on me?

Would you consider ebay/online. You can get a Corneliani/Polo suit with that money.

Yes, I buy from ebay all the time. Just not clothes (yet). Got some good buyers to search through?

Don't know your size, but this is a steal....

Lance also has some polo's on his site and Vestimenta's which are a good deal.

Ebay usually has a good selection of Polo Blue Label suits. You want the Made in Italy stuff, nothing else.

I'd avoid the Macy's/Nordstroms route. They'll have stuff in your price range, but most of it will be pretty crappy, and in my experience most of their sales staff are not knowledegeable (and will be pushing the junk they sell).
Ed's suggestions re online sources and decent-to-good brands (Vestimenta, Corneliani, Polo, etc.)
Whatever you buy, take it to a decent tailor - fit is key.
Charcoal and navy are pretty much perfect as choices for the colors of your first two suits.

Are any of the discount stores like Filene's Basement, Neiman Marcus Last Call, or Saks Off 5th near you? It takes timing and a bit of luck, but good deals can be had - if you are not in a common size that helps too.

I think the Filene's Basement suit event is over, but you could've picked up a Hickey Freeman or Canali for $450.

Not to disagree lawyerdad, but I must say while I agree they are not what some of the folks here would buy, as I was just getting started, I found that Calvin Klein, Jones NY, and I even picked up a couple of Hugo Boss suite for a reasonable price. Finding a good tailor can make a difference on a not so expensive suit looking good. So I wouldn't so quickly discourage someone who is on a limited budget and try to get them started. I will admit that since the beginnig of this year I have purchased 2 Armani's, 1 Hugo boss along with some Ferragamo, Zenga and Pliner shoes. While these items may not be your cup of tea, for me as I progress to attain your level, along with others who do have the ability to afford bespoke or MTM, it is a process that we all follow.

My advice FWIW, get what you can afford and do the best ot make it fit you properly.

Ed is a wise man. I would buy that suit in a heartbeat if it was my size. Belvest makes a killer suit, markets better then any suit from Nordstrom, including Canali at $1200+.

Those three dimensions have normal relation - ie: you're fit without being pumped. 38R seems to be a bit small to get all the sale items, but it's within mainstream sizes. Since these are your first two suits, I'm assuming you're young. Check out Get Smart's Thick As Thieves: I think I'd be hesitant to wear any of his cuts to an interview, but either of the three buttons in grey would be fine for work.

I had two brand new Borrelli Sportcoats in 38r for sale a few weeks back on here. Not what you are looking for but they were killer jackets.
