Hello all, I am Fortuna and I need some help, here is my predicament. I am 23 years old, in the military and have never really had to use a suit. I have looked through countless threads and have come to the conclusion that I want a worsted wool solid navy suit in the 100s to 120s range (hopefully that is a good start). I have heard of many places to get a quality suit as in BB, JAB, MW, and a couple of online retailers like Wizard of AAAH's, suit supply, and indochino. I honestly feel a bit overwhelmed with all of the information that I have read on SF. If someone could please shed some light on the topic it would be greatly appreciated. I am looking into a suit no more than 800 (that would include tailoring fees). I really like BB as a brand as a whole, I don't think I can afford one at full retail. I do live in San Diego, so I do have access to a BB outlet but I am not sure about the prices on their suits.

Again any advice or help would be whole heartedly appreciated.

What purpose do you need the suit to serve? Wedding? Interview? Personal / social? Out of all the ones you listed - in my opinion BB is the safest place for a beginner.

As a noob myself, you should take what I say with a grain of salt and listen to the more experienced folks. That said, I agree that BB might be your best bet of what you listed. Perhaps, SS might be a bit cheaper. I would definitely steer away from the MW level stuff. Unfortunately, you missed a recent BB sale (I think), but this suit can be had for something in the range you're looking at when on sale (though it will need at least minimal tailoring to hem the pants, adjust sleeve lengths, and add buttons):
BB 1818 Fitzgerald Fit Saxxon Wool
My experience with BB is that their Saxxon Wool is of pretty good quality. Their 1818 line is half-canvassed, which is worth the investment over a fused suit (assuming you're not willing too pay for a full canvas).

San Diego? MyTailor's suits start at $799. There's a nice blue nailhead for that price.

I am initially getting it for a wedding, but I would like this to be my regular suit for social events also. In my profession I have no need for a suit and I will hopefully not be doing any interviews soon.

I don't know much about suits but this might provide some help. The first two suits hanging in a man's closet has to be of solid shades, somewhat navy and charcoal gray, which can be worn with a blue shirt and brown shoes

I am in Canada, so I am not familiar with BB's pricing in US. But IMHO, according to the price on their website, BB is one of the most overrated/overpriced "suits brand" on this forum. Yes, Armani Boss are designer brands, so do not compare with them. First, only stubborn Americans believe Made in US actually represents good quality. Wake up, BB GF made by Southwick is not as nice as Samuelsohn or Canali. Rash American workers never pay attention to the threads left on the edge, stitches, buttons, BB's buttons are not stable, extremely easy to fall off. And seriously, 2 1818 suits for $1500 US, $2200 CAD is sale price? That is Samuelsohn regular price.

I agree that Samuelsohn is very nicely made but a suit does not retail for $750 US in the United States. You don't know what you're talking about. Samuelsohn at Nordstrom retails for around $1200, for example.

OP, before you buy I would visit several stores, including a BB, and try out different brands/models. Unfortunately the outlet BB suits are not made particularly well, so I wouldn't recommend going there. Don't buy a suit online until you have a decent sense of how a suit should fit on you and some idea of your personal preferences (e.g. lapel width, jacket length). This is best learned by trying a number of different suits on. The problem with recommending a single maker or store is that different brands and models are cut differently and look better on some body types than others, so what looks good on me might not look good on you (and vice versa of course).

A solid navy worsted suit would be terrific choice for a first suit, by the way.

Well, last time I checked Saks website they have Samuelsohn for Saks on sale for $450 USD. Also, last time BB 1818 was on sale was $1500 USD for 2 suits, at least on their website.

Not sure where you saw the $450 Samuelsohn suits, but I found them on the Off Fifth site, which is their outlet site. At the regular Saks website the Samuelsohn suits start at $1200. I very much doubt that the suits on the Off Fifth website are mainline fully-canvassed suits but happy to be corrected. Are you actually seeing these suits in person or are you going entirely by what you can find on the internet??

$450 Samuelsohn for Saks is based on their website and it was this summer. 1500 for 2 1818 suits is based on bb website. But local bb store actually offers 2200 cad for 2. Opinion on BB has unstable buttons and threads is based on my regular BB blazer.
