My First MTM Shirt - Please Critique

Hi all,

I just got my first MTM shirt and would like some advice on how to fine tune it for my next order. Any help would be appreciatied. I have some ideas, but I'll save it.

To tight. in the hips, chest, armhole is to high. sleeves too narrow.
sleeves will be too short after washing

otherwise it is perfect

who supplied measurements were you measured or self measured.

This is very subjective. There are lots of people who prefer this kind of fit.

Not when it wrinkles across the chest from the armholes to the neck on both sides.

Yes, the shirt has been laundered (and poorly ironed).

The collar is indeed too tight, same with the chest. Any suggestions on how much I should increase the chest and hips?

I will be increasing the length of the sleeves 1-2 inches and lengthening the shirt a bit.


It's good to know I got some of it right. I self-measured with help from a friend and fellow member of SF. The shirt is from Jantzen, one of the following fabrics: Jantzen 3658 Jantzen 3700 Jantzen 3706. I have no idea which one as I never got a confirmation or anything.

I was too lazy to put on real pants.

want a cheap tight shirt?
go to H & M. wash and throw the shirt in a hot dryer.

I measure several new customers each week. deciding what is considered slim and trim is highly subjective.
what is slim for going out in or going to class in, is different then slim for work in a law firm.
I have made many shirts that Ifeel are too tight. but that is what the customer asks for.
I have also gotten caught making shirts too slim for some customers who are used to wearing brooks brothers sack shirts.

WYL you have sloping shoulders with a right low.
add a little to the waist as well and ask for darts.
No problem with the advice. I have many customers who are fed up with self measured mail order custom shirts, that show up in questionable fabric.

Where do you suggest having the darts placed?

how tight do you want this shirt.
for slim , not tight shirt, I would tell you to add 2" chest waist and hips. then add the darts at the back waist area.

I'd like it slim, form fitting but not so tight it restricts movement or I'm busting out obviously.

Will do on the chest, waist and hips and the darts.

he's saying that the look the OP achieved with his MTM (i.e. too tight fitting) is essentially the same type, ill-fitting shirt you could buy for a fraction of the cost at H&M and throwing in the dryer. If you're going to do MTM, get it right. The OP is not sure what "getting it right" means, so I suppose that is why he's posting here.

actually Jantzen is only twice as much as an H & M shirt

Order placed September 14th, Received October 11. From the Jantzen thread it looks like anywhere from 2 weeks to a month is the norm.
