ernest--

Nice ties.  I especially like the navy-on-navy irregular neat pattern (Lanvin?) in the bottom pic.

Of course, with ties one's coloring is a major determinant.  Naturally, I'm attracted to the one that best suits my sallow complexion.  Nothing like a permanent graduate student pallor to limit one's options.

The seven-fold?  Yes, it too is a beauty.  Indeed, they're all top notch.

I've been looking at pictures of Prince Charles (one of my clothing idols)--and, really, every one of these ties looks like it came straight from his armoire.  (If I take up polo can I wear them too?)

BTW, if you missed the recommendation on thelondonlounge (and if, like me, you are a Prince of Wales idolator) go to gettyimages.com, click on "Editorial," and search for "Prince Charles" and/or "Prince of Wales."  Plenty of evidence that his tailor deserves nothing less than an earldom.  Not to mention the Order of the Garter.

Thanks for your comments.

I made a good deal with the 7 fold, 4 years ago, I paid it 60 euros with 50% off in a store but at the same time it was more expensive in Lanvin's shop. Today these ties are at 160 euros...
The tie just next the 7 fold, is a limited edition, I paid it 15 euros in Lanvin's shop.
Other Lanvin were 20/30 euros for most.

I paid the Montana around 20 euros.

Faconnable were around 20 euros.

Well, that proves Prince Charles must be rather poor.

I had betwen 50% and 80% off on most of my ties that's why I hahe got 66 ties.

PS Montana is out? My girlsfriend purchased me a Montana tie 10 mounth ago (and a nice Zegna coton sweater)

When I saw, it my jaw dropped. I still think it's the most beautiful tie I've ever seen. Unfortunately, it's also the tie I can wear the least because of the color. The picture doesn't do it justice, but because it's nighttime, I had no choice but you use the flash. Looking forward to seeing others' favorites.

Renault, why don't you think that tie can be worn more? That is BEAUTIFUL. I wish it were mine. What kind is it? Where did you get it? That color is perfect and it is "in" right now as well. Wear the damn thing..

I'm currently working to add more subtle solids to my collection, along the lines of the 2 Ike Behars at bottom center. Â (PS: Tom W, I bought that exact same $1 Nautica tie from Marshall's...)

acole,

Could you comment on the quality of the XMI and Tyrwhitt ties? They seem to be very inexpensive from time to time, and I really like the patterns/colors of some ties from both brands (but am also turned off a lot by some ties from both brands as well). How do they stack up against, say, your Robert Talbott BoCs?

Big fan of the Duchamp...

Thanks

I'm not much of an expert on tie construction quality. Â I don't even own any seven-folds, for instance. Â For overall construction & feel, my subjective favorite among the ones I posted is that H&K pink/blue tie...it's heavy yet wonderfully soft, and ties a great knot. Â For objective criteria, I guess I'd include: - weight (heavy enough not to fold up or flop around?) - trueness (cut on bias? hangs straight?) - knot quality - drape (fabric soft/flexible/"independent" enough to hang smoothly w/o bunching or rippling?) From my experiences buying various XMI ties on ebay and on sale, they seem to vary a lot in quality. Â The ones in the picture were 2004 designs and have substantial heft, great silks, and compare favorably to the Talbotts (as do most of the XMIs available at my local Nordstroms--the Trussardi I have is also quite similar to these in feel). Â I notice they are a bit stiffer overall and thusdo not "drape" quite as well as the H&K or my Talbotts--I think some of this depends on the size and thread orientation of the repeating pattern in woven ties. Â I've been very unimpressed with several older XMIs I've acquired through ebay--coarse fabrics, or flimsy, insubstantial interlining, and that includes some Platinums. Â So I'd advise sticking to the newer collections with XMI. Â The Tyrwhitt ties also come in different flavors, but I think the higher grades (i.e., handmade) hold their own nicely. Â I also like their designs in general. Â That repp tie in the photo is maybe a shade bulky, but I'm still quite pleased with it. Â The real advantages with Tyrwhitt are the potential for discounts and how well they match their ties with specific shirts. Â I've got a number of "striking" ties that were irresistible at the sale rack but are still unworn b/c I haven't quite figured out how they fit in yet. Â That's never been a problem with CT. Hope that helps... Adam C.

acole,

It was bizarre to see someone who has almost the exact same taste in ties as I do. Those mirror my ties as to style.

I agree with the woven-only and nothing-bland criteria.

Here's my core rotation: Hermes, Etro, Brooks Brothers, Kiton seven-fold, Brioni, Turnbull & Asser, Kiton seven-fold, Kiton wool seven-fold. In general I like ties that are a) thick, yet have softly woven silk (I can't stand coarse, heavy ones, like Oxxford's and most Zegna's, for example), b) brightly colored, especially pastels, and c) simply patterned so they can go well with my shirts, most of which are also patterned. Ideally all of my ties would be seven folds, or at least self-tipped, though I'm willing to make exceptions for boldly styled brands that I enjoy, e.g. Etro and T&A. The green Kiton and the charcoal Kiton are unworn and still have their tags; I still can't decide whether to keep them or eBay them. Amusingly enough, not counting the Hermes (a birthday gift), the Brooks Brothers tie (barely) cost me the most money; I bought it at full retail when I was in high school.
