Those are the lasts. However, the trees are hinged if you look back at the photos I previously posted.

Can I ask a silly question? In both the trees and the last, it looks like the toe curves up. Is this intentional? Won't the toes of the shoe rise up much more? I know a lot of shoes aren't flat to the ground at the toes, but this seems like it accentuates it.

Don't forget, the heel will be off the ground 3/4" to 1", so the toes will only be a bit off the ground. It's called toe spring, and it helps make it easier to walk in a shoe with a somewhat stiff sole, plus it helps keep the shoe tight around your ankles and reduces wrinkles in the leather.

It is called the ‘toe spring’, every shoe has it, although the degree of toe spring varies, according with the style of shoe and the school of shoemaking.

Don’t forget, that last hasn’t got a heel yet. Once you raise the back of the last by about ¾” (20 mm), the toe will come down.
