Today I went to an opening of a friend's mother's friend's new dental clinic. I took advantage of the opportunity to talk to the lady about my wisdom teeth problem. They're impacting and I was asking if I couldn't make an appointment with her to get them removed.

So, she agreed to do a full x-ray of my teeth.

She soon discovered that my impacting wisdom teeth weren't the biggest problem I had.

It seems that, under my lower front teeth, there's this lump of like 5 teeth in a ball. It's like some tumor made of teeth. It's not malignant, and I won't be sprouting tooth cancer anytime soon. It's just there, and it's going to cause me some major problems.

Also, a stray canine seems to be growing right in the center of my lower front jaw. I don't know how it got there.

So, it looks like I'm going to have four surgical operations ($$$$). The first will deal with that lump of teeth. The second will deal with moving the canine to its proper place with some hooks and springs or whatever. The third and fourth will involve getting the wisdom teeth out, which will involve sawing away part of my jawbone because there just isn't enough room to squeeze them past my existing molars without damaging them.

Oh, and I'm also going to get braces.

Ouch, you have my sympathy. Just make sure they totally knock you out. No local anesthesia for that for me thank you very much.

Well, I'm going to start the string of surgeries starting this Tuesday when I visit the specialist.

Bad news is, upon closer examination of my x-ray, they think I'm going to need two additional surgeries to take out two additional teeth that are growing where they're not supposed to be.

I wonder if I'm one of those people who get three sets of teeth instead of two, and that my third set is just really messed up or something.

I chose to get rid of one wisdom tooth and the "tooth tumor" today. I go back in about a month to get the other wisdom teeth out.

The wisdom tooth came out without a hitch. The tumor, on the other hand, required a lot of grinding and a lot of tugging and pulling. I had a cloth over my face, but over time it became spattered with blood. Gross.

Now my mouth is full of gauze and I'm holding an ice pack against my skin. I go back tomorrow for another dressing and cleaning. I'm taking my antibiotics and painkillers as described. Tonight's dinner will be rice gruel.

Ouch. Sounds quite unpleasant (understatement of the century). This too shall pass.

Thanks for the concern, guys.

I'm making good recovery. The dentist was surprised that there wasn't any huge swelling or anything. All I have right now is some minor swelling on the side of my jaw.

I got a good look at the stitches they put in. Yikes. I'm glad I wasn't able to see the surgeon do his work.

Glad to hear you're doing well - do your best to keep up with the antibiotics and good oral hygiene. Believe me, the last thing you want now is a "dry-socket".

Yes, take ALL your antibiotics and follow the suggestions to avoid dry socket. I finally had my wisdom teeth removed earlier this year and my dentist insisted that I did not need antibiotics. Long story short, I couldn't open my mouth, or swallow without massive pain for 8 days. Finally got some antibiotics and it cleared right up. Good stuff those drugs...

That's really odd of your dentist to suggest that. The mouth is just teeming with bacteria, and most of that bacteria really doesn't belong inside human tissue. I just got another bag* of antibiotics from the pharmacy. I'm taking them all, you bet. I've been told to many, many times

I can finally close my mouth now and chew food. Progress. *For some reason, Korean pharmacies don't dispense medicine using plastic containers. Instead you get little plastic-lined paper baggies. Just tear the pills out.

Agreed. That is what I thought of course, but he fed me these lines about my mouth being 'so good at killing bacteria that I didn't need them' and I respected his professional opinion. Big mistake...

I talked to one of my friends today, and he said that his dentist didn't give him antibiotics either. He didn't mention any huge problems, though. Funny that. I guess good dentists are as hard to find as good tailors

And likewise, one's recommendation may not be as good as another's.

My wisdom teeth are in sideways and bonded to the jawbone. Or something like that. My dentist said that they will have to chisel them out. I'm really looking forward to this.

But I found out that if I have it done in the hospital my health insurance will cover it. I'm going to call one of my physician friends to see if I can be put to sleep so I don't have to experience much of it.

So can you describe the stitching and the "drape" of your new gums? How do you properly measure your gums to find out how many teeth you should have? I have one cheek thats slightly thicker than the other one, should I go to a dentist to have my teeth adjusted a little? And can you reccomend anyone in the Seattle area to do this? And last but not least, does Jantzen offer mother of pearl teeth?
