Musty Closet Smell

I'm a little bit disappointed in how I've stored my clothes. I recently pulled out a shirt and jacket I haven't worn in quite some time, many months, actually. They have this musty, almost fragrant smell. There are some possibilities as to what caused this:

1. I store my shoes in the same closet as well on the bottom. Perhaps this is the cause?

2. My closet is really, really full. Therefore, the clothes are packed closely together, so they don't have any room to breathe.

3. Perhaps it's from keeping the closet door closed, which also prevents air circulation.

4. I don't keep the windows open, again, another way to prevent clothes from getting aired out.

5. I eat in my room most days as well, so perhaps they are absorbing the odor.

---

Looks like I've made every mistake in the book!

How do you make sure your clothes stay fresh smelling, even if you don't wear them frequently?

I am really not looking forward to the volume of laundry I have ahead of me!

Wash/ air out clothes before you store them. Buy a dresser and fold half your clothes. Only hang garments that don't lose shape in this manner.

Sounds like a pretty normal closet to me, I tend to find its good to leave the doors open once a week just to allow some fresh air in giving stuff a spray down is also a good idea, but correct washing/drying procedure should be useful as well.

All good advice except this...won't this make dirty clothes smell worse?
