Has anyone else heard of The Black Keys? A friend of mine told me to check out their album Thickfreakness, which I gotta recommend. They sound very bluesy -- and seem influenced by classic rock, if you're interested. Enjoy.

He also did a lot of work with the Talking Heads, who are also idols of mine.

I went to a David Byrne show last week--it was incredible. His solo stuff was intriguing (though sometimes head-scratching), but when he busted out his Talking Heads stuff, the crowd exploded. Everyone went nuts over Psycho Killer, Once in a Lifetime and Road to Nowhere; they were dancing on top of their seats, hooting and singing along.

Two-and-a-half hour show, with two encores. Wow. Highly recommended.

All things that are involved with the New Pornographers (including the NPs themselves) deserve hella credit - such as Zumpano, A. Carl Newman, Destroyer and Neko Case.

I'm looking forward to getting two new albums in the mail: one from Type O Negative (can't remember the name) and one by some band called "The Jesus and Mary Chain." Apparently, the very last song in Lost in Translation is performed by them, and it sounded cool enough to make me want to get it.

The Lost in Translation Sdtrk is good all over. If you like it, check out any albums by My Bloody Valentine, Air (natch), and the Jesus and Mary Chain (who were rockstars when it wasn't cool to be a rockstar).

If you have iTunes, they have a pretty cool section of playlists determined by artists. In the iTunes program, go to the music store (you won't have to register or buy anything, I love Apple). Look around, you'll find nifty playlists from people like Thievery Corp, King Britt, others - there's a lot, I jsut can't remember.

A lot is kind of trite, "yeah I figured they'd pick that" stuff, but it's good music all the same, and there are some surprises.

Recommended if you have too much free time.

Thanks for the iTunes tip. I saw those music lists before but I figured they would suck. I guess not.

Also, I do believe JAMC is available through iTunes, but the album turned out to be cheaper from Amazon.

<Laughs aloud> Quite true, indeed. They aren't exactly commercial. Never heard of Superconductor. Maybe I'll look 'em up -- good name anyway. My musical tastes flit about so much, a little Saint-Saens here, a little metal there, a little Zumpano, a little Blue October, a little (cringe, everyone) John Tesh, a little Alanis, a little Bush. Lot's of stuff. No hiphop, though.

It's unfortunate that you don't enjoy hip hop. Is there a specific reason why? I think there is some excellent hip hop out there, but most with untrained ears could not distinguish it from mainstream gangster crap.

Ah, I should have known that. 'Flowery' is probably the best single word in the world to describe Zumpano, I like the term greatly, btw. I don't know NP at all, though I hear of them everywhere -- the name is not my style (yes, I am that capricious).

Specific? Hmmm...While I can usually pick out a specific reason why I don't like a song its rather more difficult for me to generalize that to an entire style. First, something in the lyrics of every hip hop song I;ve ever heard has grated against my nerves, so that's strike one. Words and lyrics are of great importance to me. Second, I've heard that brainwaves alter themselves to reflect music a person is listening to. Now, I don't know how true that is, but it is a starting point for an analogy. I find that I have natural rhythms of thought and feeling, and music I enjoy has to somehow be in sympatico with those rhythms. Admittedly, there are many rhythms, like moods, and differing styles appeal to each. However, there are some rhythms that simply seem to never mesh with me. Hip hop has that effect. So that to me explains how I can like Breaking Benjamin's 'So Cold' and Bach (the Austrian one, LOL) at the same time, but why the Red Hot Chili Peppers sound so terribly disjointed to me. I also acknowledge that it takes a little education in every genre to find what is good and what is not, (as you said re the gangster stuff), Â but I've had the appetizer and am not likely to order the main course. Yet, if you namedrop a little for me, I'll keep my ears open -- there's always something to learn, and I don't like to condemn a genre on limited experience.
