I'm looking for a track for a new project and I'm fairly music illiterate.

Folk/blues/working class music - my best guess would be something from the '30s. The O'Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack is a good jumping off point.

Not sure what key words to search for. Delta Blues?

Thanks,
lefty

Roscoe Holcomb will be the closest to what you're probably looking for.

Thanks, great suggestions, especially Holcomb.

How would classify this music?

Holcomb is bluegrass/ appalachian folk. John Hurt is country blues. Gary Davis and House are both blues, with House using a ton of slide guitar.

You might also consider looking at the music of the Carter family who collected much of the scoth-irish music in the hills of Virginia.

Many of their most famous tracks are country staples and widely covered. If you find one you like, you can find it in many variations to fit what you want to do. One of my favorites is Wildwood Flower.

Here's an older faster version:

The more mature sadder (and IMO better) version can be found on the nitty gritty dirt band's "will the circle be unbroken".

That album is a catalog of many of the great country stars from way back when:
