Museums or activities for children in NYC?

$20 per ticket isn't cheap (I think that's the current rate) but of course the Museum of Natural History is wonderful for kids.
I've heard from friends with kids that the New York Historical Society (Central Park West at 77th) has programs for kids. They also have great collections for adults, including, currently, a Gilded Age exhibit and selections from the New York Armory show. (I went to an event there a couple of weeks ago.)
And don't forget the Central Park Zoo, if the weather's decent.
Update: And the Transit Museum, if you'll deign to enter Brooklyn (not far into the borough, don't worry!). Also see http://gothamist.com/2013/08/07/the_best_places_to_take_the_kids_in.php.
P.S. I only saw your post b/c I keep checking to see your new coats - I am loving the double-breasted Paul Stuart overcoat I got from you a couple of weeks ago.
