I'm thinking of making a foray into the world of MTM shirts and read something about getting a test shirt to get all the sizing right after which you can place an order for a bunch of stuff based on the same pattern and thus avoid a lot of back and forth with the measurements. Anyone know much about this or have good experiences of it?

M2M usually dose a finished shirt from measurements.
its the custom makers that do the test garments.
there may be a M2M maker that will do a test shirt
for an additional cost.

Cheers mate. I suspect the way to go is cautiously with one shirt and then do a multiple order once satisfied.

I use MyTailor.com. I did all of my measurements with their traveling tailor. I ordered 4 shirts, but had only the first delivered for fit confirmation. I wore it and laundered it several times prior to going back for fit confirmation and approval for the remainder of my order. Minor tweaks were done, but the first fit was very close to being right. I'm going back again next week to select two new fabrics and might adjust the sizing in one area, but the fit is pretty much spot on. I'm very happy with the result and I'm not unhappy with my fit confirmation shirt. It fits better than anything else I've got, but for the 3 that were tweaked from that pattern.

Their tailors travel to NYC? I've ordered from them and the fit is pretty good but I wouldn't mind more fine tuning.

From their website, it looks like quite often. The owner Joe Hemrajani himself does the fittings in NYC. I haven't used him. I use M. Kenny in DC.

ModernTailor will do a test shirt for $19.95. You send them your measurements or the measurements of a good fitting shirt and you build your shirt on that.

Propercloth offers free alterations/remaking of your first shirt. Prices are a bit more expensive than ModernTailor though. Cheapest shirt starts at about ~$90

This is what I do, too. Their traveling tailors go just about everywhere. Two of them work Nashville -- there's somebody here every other month or so. Their product is excellent and you'll get a way better fit having somebody measure you and telling them how you want things to fit than by trying to measure yourself and order through a website.

Joe will be back in early December. Check "Our Schedule" on their site.
