Help! I am totally new to the world of suits, and I need a good one somewhat soon (about 8 weeks). I know very little. Due to my unique build (12"+ drop @ 5'7") and limited income as a student, another member suggested going for MTM. RLBL offers this service, but it seems a tad expensive when I could get a bottom-rung bespoke for $500 more. I'm guessing that one pays a premium for the brand name there. Can you guys help me out and recommend an alternative or two for good MTM in the city? Or is that my best bet? Money is tight, but I want something nice enough to wear again and again! Thanks!

Check out The Hound on Sutter. They use Samuelsohn for their MTM program. The prices should be more palatable than at Polo. Cable Car Clothier does Southwick MTM, but that may be a bit stodgy for someone of student age. I would imagine either of these would start at $1,000 and go up based on fabric choice. Brooks Brothers also does MTM.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. I put in calls to Ralph Lauren, The Hound, Brooks Bros, and Cable Car Clothiers as well.

The man I spoke to at RL, Ed, was excellent. Very knowledgeable and helpful. The girl who answered at The Hound had the answers to all of my questions, she was also very good (and they can do MTM through others, though apparently they prefer Samuelsohn). At Cable Car Clothiers, the suits were priced a bit high. They did have the quickest turnaround (quoted 4-6 weeks), and a couple of options regarding cut. The girl at Brooks Bros seemed confused as to what "Made To Measure Suit" meant and put me on hold. Over 10 minutes later I was still on hold.... I think I'll steer clear of them!

I'll visit the RL, Hound, and CCC tomorrow and see what style/fabric/price I can live with.
