Forgive the curiousity ... how many of your MTM/bespoke purchases do you end up regretting?

I just put in an order for a DB today and I am already a bit anxious about my cloth choice. In the grand scheme of things, I think I regret about 15% of my MTM/bespoke purchases so far and very, rarely wear them. I'm curious what everyone else's ratio is and why they decided they made a mistake.

Is it because:
- incorrect style or style details?
- doesn't fit into your personal style habits?
- incorrect choice of fabric?
- poor fit?

I regret them all. And I am unhappy in the moment I recognize the problems.

For me it is not a conflict. It is evolution.

I just recently got my first suit, a MTM from Ravistailor. I'm actually very pleased with it and will certainly wear it a lot, it looks much better than I even expected. I think the sleeves could probably have done with being 1/4" longer, but that's certainly not a disaster.

I've got a few MTM shirts as well, and I like all except one (which was from Nialma and was unwearable).

This is my position as well. I am fortunate that I find a use for most of my custom clothes, or have them altered later to improve their usefulness.

One big item that taught me a lesson was a double-breasted suit I had made. It was a CMT situation where a bespoke tailor helped design the suit, but it was mostly manufactured outside of the tailor's shop. It ended up costing $2500. The suit is very well made, and fits well also. The fatal flaw is that I let the salesman talk me into the fabric: Gray flannel with rust red stripes. The fabric is Ermenegildo Zegna, and it feels and drapes great. But, I knew I'd made a big mistake when I picked the suit up and tried to find a necktie that would not clash with the design. It seems every shirt and tie I own clashes terribly with the fabric, and consequently, I never wear it. And what is the tradtional function of a DB suit with red stripes? So far I have found none.

The big lesson for me was, unless you have all the basics covered, or have money to burn, don't get suits with wild fabrics.

Get dark navy and solid gray worsted. Then get solid gray flannel. Then, maybe a navy pinstripe or chalkstripe if your business calls for it. Save the plaids and the purple windowpanes for later.

Good luck!
