My wife referred me for early access and I had a look at the UK site at the weekend.

While there are some brands I might be interested in, there's a pretty limited selection and the prices aren't that great (Charvet currently only has pocket squares, though I suppose £45 each isn't too bad).

That said, I work in Marylebone so can just go to Selfridges, Bond St or Knightsbridge to buy stuff for a similar price in an actual shop, if you don't live in London and that's not really an option then it might be good for you, especially if their selection increases (which it probably will). Also, they'll apparently be stocking J. Crew soon, which you can't get anywhere in the UK at the moment.

Shipping to Switzerland (and other non-EU countries) seems very unattractive: GBP 39.54 (apparently GBP 20 plus (Swiss?) tax) plus (UK?) taxes and duties. They say that this is DDP (Delivery Duty Paid), which is fine in theory, but then the UK taxes and duties should be removed first. E.g., for a pair of Cutler and Gross sunglasses, this adds up to about GBP 65 in shipping, taxes and duties.

Well, almost as painful with Yoox. Almost never free shipping to CH (except for Xmas), so I always pay at least 25 euros shipping + 25 euros local taxes, no VAT refund. The best of Mr. Porter for me are the exact measurements and fitting (except for shoes). And if the editorial gets refreshed often, I can skip buying Esquire and GQ UK. Is anybody familiar with the sales at net-a-porter? What are the maximum reductions? I'm not so excited about the current prices.

Haven't ordered from Yoox in years but I remember they didn't take off the VAT. A lot of other stores do, though. At Mr. Porter it just doesn't make sense in my opinion since they offer a "all duties in the destination country paid" service, but do not take off the VAT in the country of origin.

Given the prices are at or about MSRP, I think I'll be doing more bowsing of the site than actual shopping. There is a lot of stuff I can't get in Oz which is great, but then again I can always wait until I'm in London again to get the same stuff at about the same price - minus the shipping to Sydney which I imagine would be quite exxy.

It seems (for Australia at least) that the prices when using Aust as your country, already have VAT deducted.

eg Lanvin pin is 87gbp when in Australia & 100gpb when in the UK.

not sure what the 20gpp shipping PLUS tax is though?
are they just saying that to cover themselves for orders over 1000aud where us aussies get hit with tax & duties? or are there additional costs?
going through checkout i didn't see any additional 'tax' added, but i only went so far as to see the 'total cost'.

Seems priced above retail - I don't get it. Or maybe I'm just out of touch with retail prices.

Too much Gucci for my taste. I was also disappointed that some of the brands listed have very few offerings. For example, SAB has literally 1 item - a golf umbrella with none of the option choices.

Yeah, and there isn't a decent briefcase on the entire site - from any brand.

+1. I'm feeling the same way as you. I must be out of touch with retail as well.

Do John Lobb City ii actually retail at 822 pounds like in Mr Porter?

Disappointing site so far and whats up with all the 8cm T&A and Charvet ties. My gut demands the normal 9 or 9.5's.

This is the impression I got too. There's a pair of sunglasses in a shop just by my house for €220, and on the website they're £240...

Well you should pay for the privilege of not being able to handle $$$$ items before forking your money over.
