I have decided to take the plunge and finally leave the nest. Me and my gf are moving in to an apartment together. It seems as if things are moving so fast now. We start moving 2 days before I graduate. I love her and know we are ready for this. I know it will take some adjusting to get used to it. Any ideas or thoughts on how to keep things going smooth? Thanks for the help.[IMG]

Is there a space in apartment that is not shared, that is private, a retreat? Have you worked out a budget?

We will be sharing a bedroom and will have a spare room with a bed in it. W ehave worked out a budget. We are also only minutes away from a park with a beach, golf course, and running trail.[IMG]

When the shit hits the fan, guess who's sleeping in the spare bed?

I think you've hit the major points I would be concerned about. Best of luck to you, brother.

Short-term lease is my advice. Not based on your personal situation, just on averages.

    Good luck to you.

Don't forget to agree about some guidelines on who does what in the house. Are you the neat-freak type and she's not? Any personality quirks that need to be accounted for need to be addressed now. My gf and I moved in about a year ago. Things work fine because there are certain things that we agreed on when we moved in.

    1. I take out the garbage, she kills bugs. Seriouly.
    2. We do not try to move into each other's closet-space. Private space is private. And closet space is at a premium in our house.
    3. When it drove me up a wall that she would leave the vantiy soaked with water I asked her to please not do that. I kept getting my shirt wet as I leaned into the mirror. She stopped.
    4. Take advantage of the time out of the house at the park, beach, etc. Not alone, but with her. Sometimes you get in a small space and feel cramped. We try to take walks in the evening when the weather is nice. We walked our little town any number of times and don't do it to explore anymore but just to get out.
    5. Work out the finances too. You said you have a budget, but what about joint checking? Or joint checking with your own private accounts. Or keep them separate. But have that decided.
    6. Compromise.

    my 2 cents.

It is a 1 year lease. We have talked about what we will and won't do. I wont do dishes or wash clothes. She won't iron or fold clothes. I don't mind doing those things and the things i don't do she will. Right now we have things evenly split up. i think I will be all right after we get adjusted.[IMG]

It will take some effort - it will not be easy. You need to expect that. My (now) wife and I lived for maybe 2 years in a small studio apartment. Talk about lack of space. Especially as I was at my last year at University and being a typical engineering student, I was up at all odd hours working on papers and h/w. Freaked her out a bit one morning actually when I left at I think 4:30am to go to the library - I think I was preparing my presentation to my advisor and the head of the program for my senior capstone project. Anyway, my point is that compromise and a common vision will go a LONG way. And you do need to have some activities that do not include each other at least every so often. How often depends on your idiosuncrasies and your character. Edit: Did not mean to sound so pessimistic; my point is that if you go in with realistic expectations it can be a BLAST [IMG] !!!
