Moving flap pockets…

To make a long problem short: I am slim, and at 5'-7" I am forced to wear a size 36S thus I am forced to purchase 38S and then have them completely re-cut to fit me. Unfortunately, even 38S is becoming harder and harder to find, and most items I now find are 38R.

Now, if my tailor hems the bottom of a 38R to fit me, then what occurs is that the lower pockets become ill proportioned to the rest of the suit, especially flap pockets. Is it possible for flap pockets to be moved higher, as to reposition them into proportion with the rest of the suit? Alas, I can imagine that a mark will be left from the original pocket opening, but the flap would cover it up; unless if I insert anything into the pocket, then the stitching of the closed original pocket would be visible, but seeing as I never utilize the pockets, I do not see a problem regarding that particular bump in the road.

Jon.

P.S. If I'm not explaining this correctly let me know and I'll post pics of what I mean.

It seems like a very big operation that might not produce the desired results. You would have to talk to the shop's tailor. I would not be surprised if they said either "no" or "yes" on the condition that you are obligated to buy the suit regardless of the result.

The rest of the suit would be proportioned at a 38R rather than a 36S, e.g., the lapel notches and front buttons.

I think that you should turn to MTM.

First of all, I would purchase a suit on sale somewhere and take it to my tailor (she is currently unavailable or if not I would have asked her, even though its good to get other opinions). The buttons stance on 36S / 38R suits are very similar, sometimes the same depending on the manufacture.

There should be some sort of correspondence between the height of the pockets and the buttons (often the top of the pocket is line with the button). Were you to move the pocket flap, you would disrupt that. I wouldn't recommend that kind of alteration.

Actually most of the suits jackets I currently own, the pockets are situated slightly below the last button, thus even if I raise them a minuscule amount above the line-up with the last button (on a SB 3-button jacket), I should be able to get the a more correct height, ½ is everything in this case.
