Burgundy has taken a commanding lead. I consider this a personal triumph.

Doc, when you put it that way, how is a man to resist the temptation?

Just remember whose vote put burgundy in the lead and began this landslide (I consider this a personal triumph).

I was wondering if my thinking is flawed. Every time I look at the more expensive shoes, I naturally gravitate towards brown, because they all seem to do varying shades of brown really well. And I possibly only go for burgundy/oxblood for Cordovan shoes and nothing else.

As a result, all my less costly shoes (sale AE, Loakes etc) are all black, because black is just black. Is that normally what most people do as well?

My go-to casual shoe is a British tan type penny loafer. Will probably replace with #8 shell cord though.

My vote goes towards Burgundy shoes. Brown shoes can become nearly as versatile but the precise shade of Brown is a large determinant of this.

The burgundy shoes I have in mind really wouldn't go with any casual pants. But I'm sure someone can prove me wrong.
Here's the deal: If I had only one pair of shoes, it would be burgundy. But that never happens. Everybody needs more than one pair of shoes - for example, everybody needs a pair of black shoes, preferably plain or cap-toe balmorals, for funerals and formal events. Burgundy won't work for me in these instances. Once I have a pair of black shoes, dark brown, not burgundy, becomes the only choice for a second pair. Burgundy or Chestnut are a toss up for the third pair.

Definitely burgundy. It works much better across a wider range of clothing options. Brown is nice, especially some of the different shades, but burgundy is my go-to colour.

I'm going to stick with burgundy. I'd never wear brown shoes with black or gray suits; to me, it looks tacky and uncoordinated. Of course, if you're the type to throw caution into the wind and wear a yellow suit, jacket sacking down to the knees, then brown shoes might just be for you. I don't factor in jeans because almost any reasonably colored shoe can be worn with them in some way.

When the dusk clears, black shoes will always be my number one choice.

Since I started wearing more navy pants, burgundy has become the dominant choice. One caveat, I don't have a good selection of brown shoes yet.
