What do you think are the most sublime pieces of classical music ever written? The pieces which somehow, unexplainably bring you into the composer's heart? To his very soul?

I nominate:

Beethoven: Op. 130, 5th Movement, "˜Cavatina'
Beethoven: Op. 73, 2nd Movement, Adagio un poco mosso
Schubert: D. 956, op. posth. 163, 2nd Movement, Adagio
Wagner: Siegfried Idyll

Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe (Full ballet)

I haven't been able to find a single piece of music that does to me like this. FaurÃ

could come close if only his pieces weren't so short but I guess for fun's sake I guess I'll throw in his "Requiem Op.48 In Paradisum." Wish there was more to it but it is the definition of sublime.

Bach Well-Tempered Clavier
Brahms Intermezzi
Beethoven Op. 110, 111
Mahler all song cycles: Rückert Lieder especially "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen", Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Songs of a Wayfarer, Kindertotenlieder
Mahler 9th symphony, especially the 4th movement
Mahler "Das Lied von der Erde"
Prokoviev 2nd piano concerto
Rachmaninov 2nd symphony
Rachmaninov Variations on a Theme of Paganini
Shostakovich Violin Concerto
Stravinsky Agon
Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty
Tchaikovsky 4th symphony
Tchaikovsky 6th symphony
Wagner Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde
Webern Op. 10

There's lots more like string quartets of the Romantic and post-Romantic composers.

I always find these questions terribly hard to answer.

Some perennial favorites:

Chopin---Ballade in G Minor, Op. 23.
Chopin---Mazurka for piano No. 21 in C sharp minor, Op. 30/4.
All of Scriabin is sublime, especially the early mazurkas.

Beethoven's Pathetique Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13 Movement II, Adagio Cantabile

I find it inspiring every time I hear it.

I know it's the choice of the masses and therefore not popular here, but Beethoven's Ninth is my all-time favorite.

I love Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite. It has uniquely American themes and is just beautiful and optimistic.

I like Claire DeLune as well.
