Need a little help when picking out fitted dress shirts. When getting measured for a shirt, what is the single most important measurement to take account of? where can I compromise and where should I definitely hold firm?

every designer and shirt company has their own idea on fit.
so standard measurements are almost meaning less.

try on the shirts.
take into consideration shrinkage on the shirts
if the collar and sleeve are perfect prior to washing. 3 washes later the collar will be tight and the sleeves will be short.

is every part of the shirt expected to shrink? Should I get broader shoulder and chest measurements in anticipation of them shrinking as well? Thank you for your advice.

Perfect advice. I think as long as you feel comfortable when you're wearing the shirt and you feel as though you look good, then get it!

This is tough for me, so very tough. Finding a shirt off the rack is next to impossible, that does not look sloppy.

I went to Brooks Brothers today to try on the MILANO shirt. Got the 17-33. Fit well in the neck and sleeves, but when tucked in, HELLO MUSHROOM TOP

I have a 42-43" chest with a 34" waist. I am also 5'7. This sucks.

I have similar measurements to you, and one of the best fitting shirts I own comes from Kamakura Shirts, based in Japan. I reccommened you check them out. not only are they the best fit, but possibly a higher quality than Brooks Brothers.

Cool, thanks. For now I've been getting my shirts made by Ratio Clothing.

good shirts shrink between 1-3%
collars and sleeves are where most people notice the change.
shrinkage also depends on how the shirts are cared for.
if you do them at home, keep them away from the dryer.
hot dryers make shirts shrink more then expected.

most RTW shirts are based on statistical averages.
most men who have a 17" collar do not have 33" sleeves

my only other word of advise, is if you are not going to wear a tie, it is ok to size down the body.

Price seems right ( $79 ) for oxfords but definitely would be trial and error. Returns seem annoying w them, I am not near any stores

Yeah that's fair. Ratio clothing is spot on for you? Have you tried Proper Cloth?

Well yes, with Ratio i sent in measurements and we figured out a size. It also helped to stop by their shop in Denver to get a few adjustments. Still not 100% sure on fit but maybe I am just being picky.

I just looked at my Ratio shirt's measurements and compared to BB Extra slim fit (milano) and the milano is 7" bigger in the waist than the Ratio shirt :)

haha wow that's a massive difference. I think I'm gonna get at least one shirt from there and see how it goes. Thanks again.

You're welcome. They're great. You may even be able to send in a well-fitting shirt and have them match it or make adjustments off it. Ask..

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
