Another is Gundula Janowitz's unbelievable performance of Biem Schlafengehen from Strauss' "Vier Letzte Lieder." I've never heard a voice rise above Strauss' music like that of Janowitz, and I've heard at least 5 or 6 different sopranos trying it. She is a phenomenon.

These came to mind, not the greatest but recent favorites. Bonnie Prince Billy. "Love Comes To Me". Great Lake Swimmers "Song For The Angels". Clint Mansell "Death Is The Road To Awe"

Thanks for posting this. Her singing of the opening lyrics perfectly captures the mood and idea of the title, and is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

I own this version as well as a few others. Janowitz gets it right with her pure, silvery tone for sure; I also enjoy Renee Fleming's version as she recorded it before she began her awful habits of scooping and glottal foolishness. She has a full, rich tone that suits Strauss lieder well and her interpretation is not bad either.

My favorite of the four is Im Abendrot. The image of a weary old couple sitting hand-in-hand, watching the sunset as their souls drift upward (represented by two singing birds) never fails to get me all teary-eyed. What a beautiful image of death.

    Such pained beauty.

Or beautiful pain, depending on how you look at it. Those Romantic-era German poets ate that stuff for breakfast [IMG]
