the city itself is amazing, its just so full of tourists, I really felt overwhelmed by the tourists. also, the food is meh, compared to other parts of italy. while I really loved seeing some of the extraordinary art in Florence, I realy love walking around a nighborhood in an italian city and seeing a cool fountain or small peice of art, or sitting down to a nice neighborhood meal with real italians.

Definitely true. We very often use "Scheiße" ("shit") and "Arschloch" ("asshole"). Our "Scheiße" is like your "fuck". I couldn't imagine a German movie though where they say "scheiße" for a couple hundred times (and actually I don't want to).

Where were we a gain? Right, honeymoon..

granted, you don't go to Florence for the food (though I do want to get out to Dario Cecchini's places one of these years). they seem to have the same approach to cuisine as back-bay bostonians (hi vox!). pretty decent wines, though.

While i've got bunch of well traveled fellows all in the same thread:

My fiance and I live in Seattle and are getting married next June 29th in New Hampshire. We're looking around for places to "mini moon." Just looking for a 3-4 day getaway that wont break the bank and will have some nice weather.

So far in the running are:

Somewhere in the caribbean (Dominican Republic?)

    California wine country

At the moment I'm kind of leaning towards california wine country because I'm not keen on having a long flight to NH, then a long flight to the caribbean, then a really long flight home. Also, I'm afraid the caribbean might be too hot in early july?

Any input or other suggestions? Places in california to consider?

Congrats! There's a Meadowwood package on gilt city right now. Think it's for 3 days. Looks really beautiful. Or if you want cheaper just stay at Olema Inn and drive around Pt. Reyes and Marin County. You will need a car.

Also in that direction: the Canadian Maritimes- Nova Scotia/PEI/Newfoundland. WIth just 3-4 days, maybe just Nova Scotia. Beautiful that time of year.

Not a fan of wine country.

If you're in the NE and want an active vacation, then a hiking/road trip through the Adirondacks would be great. Or feeling a little more adventurous, hit Montreal then drive through the Eastern Townships of Quebec. NS is also a great idea. Fly into Halifax and do the south shore, then take a short plane to Cape Breton and drive/explore the Cabot trail.

I think you have better options than the DR in the Caribbean.

    Thanks for the replies, everybody!

Where else would you recommend? I'm drawn to the DR mainly because I've hear that it can be inexpensive, and I'm a big fran of their cigars!

Mexico. You can find value with as much chillax as you need. Look at Tulum if you have a few more bucks or Isla Holbox for a great less expensive vacation. Buy your cubans at the airport. The caribbean can be pretty expensive and filled with idiots.

Don't discount the NE of the US if you don't know it well. You can easily spend a few fun days touring Maine for example.

It would be helpful if you posted what type of vacation you're after - city/beach/adventure/relax.

^ thanks. NE is out because my fiance is from NH so NE doesn't feel special to her. Definately looking for a relaxing vacation. Most interested in a beach, wine country notwithstanding.

If you like drinking wine, then I guess wine country is something to see. I lasted 23 minutes. Think there are nicer parts of CA.

Not sure where an inexpensive caribbean holiday is to be found. Jamaica maybe. Cuba if you're up for the travel challenge.

What I do like about Holbox is that for the most part it is a quiet little fishing village. No cars on the island. Things may have changed somewhat in the last few years, but you could get a reasonable room on the beach for $65. Lunch consisting of fresh grilled fish, guacamole and two beers was $6. Bit of a bitch to get there as you have to fly to Cancun, bus/car to the top of the Yucatan, ferry across, then golf cart to your hotel.

    Good luck.
