thank you and thank you. i don't know why, but pisa isn't that appealing to me (on the scale of things i want to see in italy). i mean the tower and the baptistry are amazing, but i feel like i would just get sad looking at the ruined frescoes of the camposanto. if we do go i will be sure to try that restaurant.

not to push you where you don't want to go, but even for an old agnostic like me, the cathedral at pisa was a deeply spiritual experience. the frescoes are far from ruined (at least when i was there last ... in the intervening century that may have changed). they are definitely aged, but that adds to the miraculousness of it. anyway. grilled quail.

Hmm, well I'll add it to the list then. What I'm referring to FYI is that the Camposanto was destroyed in WWII. Used to be the big attraction (more so than the tower) but it had a lead roof, which melted during a raid and completely ruined the until then very well preserved frescoes and sculpture. What is there now is part of a 7 decade long effort to restore it.

If we go to Umbria I really want to see Orvieto.

Pisa is in Tuscany, so that should work out ;)... didn't love it either though, but it's passable. I've just been there for a day, so take this with a grain of salt. We had quite good pizza there though that you ordered per meter and was placed on a pull-out plate at your table.

If ever you are in Los Angeles, you really must try one of our sushi boat bars. Their conveyer systems are revelatory.

Are you serious? Looks like those crappy sushi lines. Why would you recommend that to me? :(
Or is A' Float Sushi just a parody? Who knows, who knows. Reviews look mediocre at best.

Really, the pizzeria wasn't too bad. Was recommended to us from the private Bed&Breakfast (without the breakfast) guy where we stayed at.

oh sweet jebus. forget everything i wrote. i'm doing too many things at once here. i meant assisi, not pisa. what a knucklehead. le stalle, though, is about 20 minute walk from the cathedral in assisi. pisa is ... nothing. don't bother.

I really tried to remember the cathedral, but I couldn't. Assissi looks great!

@mordecai: Don't deny it. I'm really hurt now.

i just read michael lewis' "boomerang" and he goes on at quite some length about the german fascination with scatology. the book is about the financial crisis, of course.

There's a really cute Marcel Dzama painting of a woman in a full body green leather outfit pooping on a guy's head called "My German Vacation" or something to that effect. I cannot find it and it is driving me crazy.
