Hello,

Anyone care to opine on the 2004 Reserve? I'm excited to uncork it for my wife's birthday. Are there better Cabs in the $100 range? What might this compare to?

Great wine, great year, if you can get it for $100 you are lucky.

Much too young to drink now, though.

While I'm no oenophile and Manton may be correct re youth, I popped two bottles on New Years Eve and they were both spectacular. Rich and tasty with tons of structure but not tannin bombs. $100 bucks is a good deal

I was $135 at the winery about a month ago. Maybe $125. $80 is excellent.

Could have sworn I saw this for around $85 the other week....I was intrigued but didn't bite. Will look for it next time.

I just checked my cellartracker.com and I got two bottles for $80 each...at *cough* CostCo. Agree with Manton, let age for at least another few years. Can probably be made drinkable, with a couple hours of decanting, but why not wait until it has matured?

If you want a 2004, try a pinot, like a Sea Smoke. Can be bought for that money, and is drinking fine right now.

There are much better bottles to be had in the $100 price range. Rudd, Chateau Montelena, Caymus, are just a few to name. I would take 2 bottles of Grgich Hills over (1) of the Mondavi Reserve.

No way you can get Caymus for $100.

I agree re: Montelena, and it ages better, too.

You must mean their Special Selection, or whatever they call it. I just got a bottle of Caymus Cab (2005 I think) at a restaurant last week (on a cruise ship) for about $100 including a tip for the Sommolier. But it wasn't the special selection. I think the retail on it is in the $75 range or so for a 2005.

Sea Smoke is going for over $100 where you are? Wow.

Try DuMol, A.P. Vin, Loring, or Peay.

Thanks for your feedback. I've seen Sea Smoke Pinot, but I can't recall the price; I'm sure there are different levels, no?

The regular everyday Caymus I buy for $65 a bottle. Their special selection is well over $100.
