I've gotten a wool/cashmere overcoat pretty extensively tailored. What kind of coat are you thinking about altering?

Yeah - that sounds like too large of a coat to have sized down.

The shoulders, for one, will be too big.

I was wondering the same question. If a coat is in size large but the person usually wear medium, it wouldn't be worth it?

Well depends on the cost of the coat and the alterations.

For example. lets just say for argument the coat costs something like $400. I get it for like 180$ and it costs me 80$ in alterations

I might expect a coat that *almost* fits to take $80 in alterations. I was quoted 90-100 for alterations on a jacket I just bought that was the right size (wanted to take out shoulder pads, lower the collar, and bring in the waist a bit, each of those cost $30). A heavy coat is likely to cost a little more per alteration to work on...

One this far off probably involves a lot of dissassembly and recutting so in addition to working with a heavy fabric, they will be getting pretty close to making you a new coat (in which case you had better hope they are good or it will look terrible).

Just buy a new one...there is a RLL on STP in a wool-cashmere blend that with a few stacked discounts comes out below $200 shipped
