Im not a fan of country at all. But I wont hate on it. Too easy. Me and my brother have been discussing where we see this genre of music heading in the near future. I dont know much about country at all. Except Ill put my opinion as this:

Todays country music is not progressing.
Todays country music is constantly compromising its identity for a larger audience.

Discuss!

Today's country needs more outlaws. Real outlaws. Not phoney, manufactured ones. And stop singing songs of freedom. Of course, Neil Young is excluded from this last one because he can do whatever the hell he wants.

here was my brothers opinion:

It all sounds the same. Don't they have hearts or souls? Oh yeah you wear your vintage tee and arm bands. Confront the hard issues but stay family oriented, OH YEAH you play your angels and airwaves lead guitar with a slightly distorted rhythm in the back ground and your ABABABAB rhyming choruses. MAKE ME FEEL GOOD ABOUT MY COUNTRY but your songs are washed up quicker than some jingle by a rapper named CHINGY. Youre just like WalMart and I don't think you'd feel bad playing a show right in front of wal mart. You wouldn't would you? You know that you would have a huge fan base, beer, and roasted pig. You don't even get drunk anymore, country music. You sing about margaritas and tropical smoothies and wearing shorts in the summertime but when was the last time your wife kicked you out and you lost your dog? COME ON. Youre just as plastic as corny r&b, youre just as original as mainstream hip hop, and I see more parallels between country and pop/hip hop then country and rock. I mean REALLY, how many songs can you write about a sunset in texas while your football team is playing and your driving down an old country road playing FEEL GOOD MUSIC, while your girl sits in the back with a little black dress getting wasted off strawberry wine!?!?!?!?

There are still some good country outfits playing. The Gourds come readily to mind.

Today's "Country" hits are not Country music, they are Pop.

Yeah, it's great. Their new album, Heavy Ornamentals, is quite good too.

That's moronic. Like most other genres, the best country is coming out of the indie scene: Neko Case, Howe Gelb, Bert Jansch, M. Ward, Flying Canyon, David Thomas Broughton, etc. There's tons of amazing country music out there, it's just not spoon-fed to you.

For anybody into R'n'R, but not country, start with Uncle Tupelo. I can't imagine anybody not digging that ****.

Amen: Too many hat guys. Tim McGraw gets a pass though because of his troubled childhood, and the fact that he had more strength of character than Tug, his father.

We need more Toby Keiths, David Alan Coes and Merle Haggards.

Top 40 county is insipid. The above mentioned gentlemen produce some damn fine music in the original American art form.

Pop/hip-hop is crappy music? All of it? It's rather absurd to write off that much music en masse.

When the hell did "pop" become a dirty word? I blame N'Sync.

Cory Morrow and Shooter Jennings are both pretty accessible and pretty damn good.

Most people think if they write off pop in favor of other, somehow "purer" (quotations intended) music forms, they're somehow cooler or more music savvy than the average music fan.
