I always thought they were to protect the legs bu tactually they are supposed to support the legs in a long march and became popular after the British adopted them by other armies . I think after WW2 they thought the long marches were over , then in '82 the Flaklands war occured and they had that long yop and as you saw the boots were pish and some troops were close to trench foot. .I think they changed early - mid eighties. The inferiority of our lads’ rubbish footwear was exposed during the Falklands War. They were taking boots off dead Argentinians as they were vastly superior. I think the puttee business dates back at least to the Boer War!
Would have preferred navy over black, but I dare say I'll have a few funerals to attend soon.
