Nice find today while thrifting. 1950s/early 60s L-2B flight jacket.
Needs the ribbing and zipper replaced but it's well worth it for the $28 I spent for it. Probably will still be able to resell for a pretty penny once it's been restored.

A buyer from Japan will probably give you $500 for it in that condition. The McCoy's replica of the Blue Anchor L-2b is around $600

I remember the book as the follow up to “Skinhead”. I recently bought and re-read “Chopper” from the same period.
I used to confuse the hell out of people, as I was, still am, a biker at heart, but loved the sta-press, loafer, Royals, harrington, as well as the jeans and leathers look, and I hung around with both bikers and skins/suedes, without any trouble from either group.

Honestly I felt the same. I liked decent motorbikes - everything from step-through little Hondas to big Nortons and Beezers - but I couldn't stand the soapy way greasers dressed nor their retro taste in music. Mind you, I loved scooters too.

Love the look of old motorbikes, but I wouldn't have one, but I also got (and still do) peeved when people assumed that you had to have a scooter to be a mod, and only listen to certain types of music, and to some extent wear only certain types of clothes.
Yes I have had several scooters over the years, from the age of seventeen up to my mid forties and loved riding them, but my musical tastes are very catholic and have been all my life, and I've also worn clothes that didn't fit in with the "mod police" mentality.
Am I a mod now, have I ever been a mod, to some people the answer may be no, to some yes. I stopped attending mod events, weekenders over 20 years ago, because in my opinion it was becoming a fancy dress, and competition who had the best scooter. When I look at photos of supposed mod do's nowadays it looks even worse.

I’ve always been a bit conflicted about this. Being so isolated from ‘the scene’ ... I doubt I’d go out of my way to attend a weekender or something like that but if I happened to blunder into one, part of me would enjoy shooting the **** with a bunch of supposedly like-minded individuals but sometimes I see pics of those events and it looks a bit too similar to those sad as **** rock n roll nights they used to put on for the Teds.
I suppose a key difference being that you can be a Mod, or at least be influenced by Mod style, and go about your business partly under the radar while still ‘fitting in’ with generally appropriate dress codes etc, whereas if you’re a Ted you either stick out like a sore thumb every day, or else you dress ‘normal’ and break out the Brylcream and dust off your velvet drape and creepers for a special night out.

The few times I have ridden pillion on a motor bike I’m not sure which I disliked more- the discomfort or the blinding terror.
Part of me, though, likes the idea of doing up a BSA Bantam as they were made opposite the school I went to. I suppose if I followed that to the logical conclusion I would also get a Humber armoured car as they made the machine guns in the same place.

Two wheel transport is vulnerable in crowded cities. You can decide to drive assertively but a mistake by a car or truck and you may come out of it badly.

Scooters may be more suited to better climates too. The middle-aged head gangster in Italian Netflix series ’Suburra’ drives a scooter everywhere. However, it is a Yamaha T Max 500 which seems pretty appealing but costs a fortune. He also falls off it in one episode.
